Darn construction
« on: April 01, 2006, 08:36:45 AM »
Anyone have a better method than my steel wool and citra-solve approach to reomoving asphalt from my exhaust pipes?  i made the mistake of turning down a road that was being paved, and it paved the underside of my bike!  all this after furiously polishing and cleaning last week.  well, i guess i'll start from scratch today.  let me know if anyone has any tips.

Straight gasoline on a soft cotton cloth or terry cloth towel should take it right off.
No.

Naptha does a pretty good job. (lighter fluid)  Has less carncinogenic chemical compounds to absorb through skin/inhalation than gasoline.  Not too aggressive toward paint, either.

I like the gas idea, but wd-40 works, too.  Works on bug guts, too.  Compared to gas, it is sllllooooowwww!

Asphalt is petrolieum based, so kerosene will take it off unless it is really burned on. If it is burned on a fine wire wheel on a drill will loosen it. Use a light touch.

I'm no safety nut, but a lot of people get hurt using gasoline as a solvent.  If you use it, do it outside, minimize the amount you have open, and use nitrile gloves.

I've used turpentine, mineral spirits, and diesel to remove asphalt and tar, and they all work.  They aren't quite as flammable as gas.

I think Turtle Wax has a Bug & Tar cleaner that works well on smaller spots once you get the caked on stuff off.
