I watched it live on CNN as it happened. Hate the feeling of helplessness watched way to many people get washed away.  :'(

I feel bad for Guam they don't have that much elevation unlike Hawaii. Hopefully it wont be as bad.

Dang, been fixed to the screen watching this, that was massive! Boats chucked up on the land like toys and that surge inland must have killed hundreds. :o
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Send your Thoughts, Prayers, Luck, Wishes, Mojo, Chi, Karma; Whatever the people affected by the quake and wave need!

What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.

Sadly, I think the consequences of this will be huge, just too early to assess totality yet.  :'(

Very sad news.  The waves have already reached us here on the west coast of the US, causing minor damage in harbors, but the damage in Japan is devastating.   My prayers go out to the people of Japan.

Sad sad news for sure. Just wondering the vicinity of the quake and flood to Yamiya? Do you think they were affected? I have no idea where all those cities are over there.

No Yamiya was not affected. its in Nagoya which is south of Tokyo. Nagoya did get a prolonged tremor with buildings shaking but no damage or flooding. Tokyo and north of this were not so lucky.

I think I need to buy another boat...FAST!
That's about the 20th quake along the rim of fire in the last month, they believe the Japanese coast has moved 2.5 metres!!!

My brother was commenting on how bad one of the boats was being tosseded about.  My comment was the people in the boat were better off than the ones in the house floating next to it.

Do you really think your boat or houseboat will do well against a 6m wave?

Honestly, I was also thinking about Yamiya - received some great parts from them last year. But my worries are with all the people affected by this freaking tsunami. I've been in Tokyo for several times over the last four years and can't believe all the destruction I see on TV now. Have some Japanese colleagues over there working for Yamaha. Hopefully I will hear from them soon.

Things are not looking very good right now. Sadly, watched a detailed explanation of the fault slippage and there is a strong possibility that now that the stress has been relieved in this spot, it often transfers to spots a couple of hundred miles north and south of the initial location. This could be bad for Tokyo. :-\

As if the earthquake and tsunami weren't bad enough, now all the problems with the nuclear power plants!!! Some of what is being reported on the news about the nukes doesn't quite add up; I fear it may be far worse than what we are hearing.

6 meters is only 20 feet. I've been in close to that size chop on a 42 footer, and others call it a regular job to be in it. I've seen nearly double that on ferry boat rides.

This 1958 incident was a lollapalooza- knocked down trees way up on the mountaiside. Some on boats survived by pulling anchor and riding it out. Others were anchored, asleep and never seen again.

It was the speed of the wave that differs from your experience, the waves were up to 10 metres when they hit shore depending on where you were located in Japan, there is a small fishing village further north of the worst destruction with 17,000 people, more than 10,000 are missing, they just found a 60 year old man 15 kilometres out to see on the roof of his house. You must remember when comparing a tsunami with ocean swells, ocean swells don't travel anywhere near as fast as a tsunami, some tsunami waves travel at 100's of kilometres an hour, that is why they are so destructive.....

Here's the Lituya Bay wave heighth quote:

Almost immediately after the earthquake and the giant rockfall of July 9, 1958 at the head of Lituya Bay, a massive mega-tsunami wave splashed to a maximum height of 1,720 feet on the southeast spur of Gilbert Inlet. The wave spread across the rest of the Lituya Bay wiping everything in its path on either side, over an area of about 4 square miles (10.4 sq. kms).

I still take being in a boat over being on top of a house when it comes to being out to sea.

From what I see of the video  of many of the boats being tossed about is that they are actually riding it out pretty good. It's just that the boats end up on dry land when the water rushes back  out. They behave like boats, can not do otherwise regardless of the speed of the wave.

I just came across this link. You can drag back and forth to see the before and after tsunami satellite images of the affected areas...mind boggling to say the least.

THe local stories about the Lituya wave are around in Juneau.  Some of the survivors were still around  five years ago.

The biggest scary  thing about the wave  was not so much riding it up but when it fell out from under them. The boat fell off the wave and seconds after being up they were underwater looking at sea water through the pilot house windows.

I've got to say, I'm extremely impressed with how the general population of Japan is dealing with this.  From the coverage I've seen, they're being quite calm, cool and collected about the whole ordeal (generally speaking).  That says a lot about their culture and character.  Even amid growing fears of increased radiation and dwindling resources, they seem to be pulling together to get through this.  I guess that could change, but for now, they're holding together better than I thought they would.  There was a story on CNN telling the story of how when there was only enough food rationed for 4 people (when there were 6 people who were hungry) at a shelter, those 4 separated the food to make sure all 6 got equal portions.

The reason I even mention this is I was just thinking back to the New Orleans victims dealing with the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.  Looting stores (yes two N.O. female cops were caught on video stealing shoes from a looted department store) and idiots shooting at the helicopters coming to rescue them seemed to be the reaction from quite a few of them.

What a stark contrast.

Nomad,

Add this to your list of poor responders.  All the people who live thousands of miles from the troubled nuclear plant who are hoarding Potassium Iodine tablets!  The $$ spent on those pills would do much more good if it were sent to a relief agency!

I don't know, maybe they aren't really hoarding it for themselves and are planning to send the tablets to friends and family who REALLY ARE at risk of exposure.  Likely some combination of humanitarian and narcissistic hoarding I'm sure.

I was in Waikiki when the tsunami passed hawaii. Nothing happened where we were but warning sirens are sure eerie sounding at 1, 2, and 3 am in the morning. I kept waking up and looking out of our 4th floor hotel window and expecting water in the streets, but nothin....good thing!

My wife works part time at the Wedge Natural Foods Co-op here in Minneapolis and they have had a run on the Iodine stuff.  It has disappeared from most stores here.  As far as the Japanese government goes I don't think they are being honest about the severity of the nuclear problem.  They are now trying to dump water from Chinook choppers on the stricken reactors to try and cool them down.  It seems to be a last ditch desperate move that looked totally ineffective. It is gonna get worse and out of control I fear.

Latest from WikiLeaks:
With fears of a possible nuclear meltdown in Japan continuing to escalate, evidence that the nation received warnings over the stability of its power plants from an international watchdog more than two years ago has emerged via a new round of diplomatic cables accessed by WikiLeaks.
As the Telegraph is reporting, an official from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said in December 2008 that safety rules were outdated, and strong earthquakes would pose a "serious problem" for the power stations.

I was under a tsunami warning at one time after Kobi earthquake. Got a bit of drama out of my landlord about it, I guess he had a more vested interest at the time.  After it was  measured at Akkutan at 3 cm. it was pretty well safe to come out in Southeast.

Radiation is a different deal completely, and Alaska and PNW  will get some.
