Welders: Need 750 frame repair tips, advice, etc
« on: March 17, 2011, 11:42:09 AM »
I did a search on frame repair and not much came up (at least for my malady). Ok, the photo shows the cross tube I cut out of a (junk, untitled, $10) donor frame that has the center stand mounts welds. This tube has rotted out on my K0, i.e. the weight of the bike has pushed the center stand mounts into this tube when trying to use it. It's sorta been a PITA not being able to center stand the bike for oil, tire changes, etc. but I've lived with it 'cause this was my only (well) running bike. Well, it's not running now so the engine is coming out. I know a few of y'all have experienced this (I posted about it ages ago before I figured out the problem), but I haven't heard the fix. I have a few buddies that are accomplished welders and (obviously) a piece I can use. Are there any tips from anyone thats done frame repair? Should I use a junk crankcase to keep everything in line? Does it need to be slugged? Can I get away with cutting the bad tube out and welding the new one in? I know #$%^all about welding except you get to wear a space age hat when ya do it... Advice???

All hard to answer questions without seeing it. Depending on how badly your frame is rusted different techniques may be needed. Find a good welder and use his judgement. An old crankcase in the frame would be a good idea. I intend to slip tube my repair, hard to do on a centerstand tube.

I agree, if you have a good welder he will know what to do.

Coming from a guy who has replaced a down tube on his 1970 CB750, I'd suggest to think real hard about finding a replacement frame and swapping numbers.
