1974 CB500 K2 Engine Timing

Dear Fellows,

I need to fix engine timing, I downloaded the manual and really need few answers:

First there are no mark on camshaft, is this normal or something wrong with my cam?

What mean by "No. One piston is at Top Dead Center of the compression Stroke"

Any help will be highly appreciated.

It's not a mark on the cam shaft end, it's a square notch of material cut out of the shaft.  Are you positive there is no notch in the end of your cam shaft?   

Top dead center of compression stroke means when the piston is at the absolute top of its upward travel, and both cam lobes for that cylinder are in the upward position allowing both the intake and exhaust valves to be fully closed.

Dear Gordon,

I am from Karachi, Pakistan. I will check the notch but another stupid question is what to do with the notch, should it be aligned with something?

I mainly do vintage British bike, Triumph and BSA mostly and this CB500 is my first Japanese project  >:(.

Please advise how to set the engine timing.

I can't say for sure about the alignment for your particular model.  Which manual did you download?  A decent one should detail this procedure fairly well.  Perhaps try another one?

The Honda shop manual covers this well.  Can't imagine working on the motor without one.

Sorry Gordon you are wrong on this one, followers work on the top surface of the lobe so lobes up = valves open; lobes down = followers on base circle so valves closed

bucket and shim type engines with no rockers.
