Carb sync done...now starter doesn't work
« on: March 30, 2011, 12:08:44 PM »
These are not related, just feeling 1 step forward, 2 steps back.

I have no problem when I kick start the bike. Turns over first kick, no sweat. But the starter button does nothing. I checked fuses (blade type), they all look good, and I didn't think this would effect it anyway.

Any ideas of where first to check?  I was in the headlight bucket a while ago, but I'm pretty sure that the electric start worked after that.

Just fishing for places to start.

Thanks in advance.

Check your starter relay, on the electrical panel.
Bikes parked out front mean good chicken-fried steak inside.

Is it making noises when you hit the button? Clicking usually indicates low battery charge or relay. No sound usually indicates extremely low battery or switch issues. You can check the switch by testing continuity on the starter switch connector in the headlight bucket. Put leads on yellow/red and black. These should have continuity when the button is pushed. If no continuity, you have the common broken/dirty starter switch issue.

No noises, forgot to mention that in OP. Sorry about that.

I will test that when I get home. Battery was out for a few cold days. I'll test, and bring battery in for a fresh up.

Thanks.

My bike did that once it turned out to the starter solenoid. You can take it apart and clean it. There are posts on here about that. Mine has worked since.

First verify that the start works.
Bridge the tow big posts on the solenoid together:  big sparks and and the starter motor should spin.

Then verify that the starter solenoid works.

There are two small wires on the solenoid apply power across these should engage the solenoid and the starter.
There are two wire Y/R and Gr/R.  Gr/R is ground when the trans is in neutral or the clutch is pulled in.
Y/R is +12 when the the stater button is pushed in.  If the solenoid is good, then one of these is missing (pwr or GND), and you have to track the path to find the omission.

Gotta say.  The bar switch is most likely crumbled.  But, maybe you are lucky to have something else go awry.

I'll check the switch as soon as I get home. Then off to the next checks.

Thanks guys.

Sorry to have waste your time folks. I threw the battery on the tender overnight, and the starter worked instantly after I got the battery back on the bike.

I had always heard a clicking in the past if it was really low. This time I guess it was so low it didn't even do that, which is why I posted.

At least I will know the procedures now for when te starter button does turn to dust :)

Thanks for all the input.

Now find out why your battery is low.

I think it may have been a bunch of low RPM riding, few really cold days without running, and then me doing carb sync - first time, idling for quite a while.

I'm looking at new batteries soon. This one does ok if I charge her up pretty regular, but hauling it inside to te tender is a pain, so I get lazy about it. Hopefully now that the weather is better, I can hope for a decent stretch without having to stress it.

How old is it? Did it come with the bike?

It did cone with the bike, but the PO assured me it was te bestest, greatestest, most loving battery of all time :)

Actually, it was new, and I tested it with one of those ball float testers a while ago, and it seemed fine. I've tested it with multimeter as well, and it is usually pretty good (within specs found here on the forum). But it has given me enough issue this very cold winter to want to start fresh.

But there is snow on the way AGAIN tonight!!!  I will, wait for the Spring weather before dropping any cash on a new one.
