Wheel bearing retainers - threading?
« on: April 12, 2006, 10:24:50 AM »
I know the topic has been covered quite a bit. . .  I've been searching the board and the Greenspun archives - and I've seen a variety of reports, but I cannot tell which are definative.

My problem - I'm wanting to replace my wheel bearings on a 1975 CB750K.  What is the threading on the front and rear bearing retainers (left or right)? Is it different among bike models OR even among different years?  I'm afraid of working against myself if I start turning these things in the wrong direction.

I've seen mention that this should be included in the FAQ but I don't see it, yet.  - I think a wheel/steering/swingarm - bearing replacement FAQ would be a great addition to what is there already.

Thanks,
Paul.

Use a drill to spot remove the centre pops holding the retainer in place.( just enough to  remove the deformed threads, less than 1/16" deep) Easiest thing I've found (particularly if you dont have special tool, or even if you do) is to hold a piece of flat stock in a vice like an oversize screwdriver and turn the wheel( you do need a vice)
Doesnt take too much effort to mess up the slots but a liitle time with a hacksaw and file on a piece of flat plate and you have something that works well.

Thanks crazypj - I'll definately try drilling out those deformed threads.

How are the retainers threaded? Both right handed or left handed - or one of each?
