I just reciently got my '78 CB750. About 2 months ago now I ran into my wife's best friend's ex-husband out at a bar and we got to chatting. He proceeds to show me pictures of a bobber tells me he has it up for sale to pay for the repairs on his Harley. I fell in love at first glance and bought the bike unseen.
Granted, I know the guy so it's not really a stretch to buy it that way. The carb's need rebuilt which I go ahead and have done here locally at "The Shop" a local motorcycle shop. It warms up enough to get the bike home and it's a mess. By mess I mean it's covered in grease and hasn't really been cared for. I think it ended up as a rat bike mainly because he didn't really care about it. I give it some love and end up here:
The shop tuned the carbs while it was still really cold outside so they weren't quite tuned properly. The first time I tried to fire it up when it was warmer it wouldn't start. After tuning the carbs by ear we were off and running.
He had told me the neck bearings were shot so I ordered those and they are sitting in my garage waiting to be put in .. likely next week after I get back from my business trip. He had also told me to be careful and not move the engine kill switch because it was screwed. Of course, I knock it out of position and can't get it back lined up. I end up killing the battery trying to get it back into the proper position.
Rather than pulling a wiring schematic to see if I can bypass, I keep working on it using the kick start .. still have the damn bruise on the inside of my leg from the oil tank. I finally pulled it and bypassed the switch all together. After charging the battery it now fires every time.
I stumbled across a picture of a bike on Carpy's site that I wanted to use for a basis for building mine. I assumed the tank was after market and after emailing him trying to buy one, he informed me that it was a stock tank from a '76 K series. So started the hunt for one of those bringing me to this site and Charlie's post of random stuff. My tank is now in the mail so starts the parts collecting.
Once I actually start changing things out, painting, powdercoating, and generally moving past the planning phase of this project, I will post it in the projects thread with pictures and updates.
