No center stand.....Im in a pickle
« on: April 13, 2006, 02:24:58 PM »
With having a long weekend off I figured I would finally mount my new rims/tires....but...I have no centerstand and the Kerker 4-1 doesnt give me any room to jack/lift the bike.

What kind of improvising can I do to get by ???     I guess I need to pick up a stand to have around for times like this. ::)

pull off the pipes and sit it up on a crate like a motorcross bike. that should do it.

Dont really wanna pull the pipes.

Would a sling thru the triple trees and a come-a-long work to lift the front? Saw a mordern crotch rocket on a sling like that with the front wheel off in a shop today. Didnt notice if the rear was on anything to stabilize it though.

On the 650 (did honda make a 650) the reason the cener would be gone is there is no stop for the centerstand so it comes up and rubs the chain. If the tabs are still there and you could put one on and fabricate a stop.

Or you could just pop for a couple of stands. I've seen 'em as cheap as $50, and they are pretty useful at various times.

i like 550's idea with an improvement.   sling the front (make sure to not use the bars but weave thru the triple clamps and around the steering stem making sure to weave asymetrically)  and use 2 tiedowns on the rear which will go out and hook to perhaps the garage walls to simply stabilize the bike from side to side  attached to the frame somewhere near the taillight/seat area.

can be done in reverse for the rear and is how we did it in the shops i've worked in.

p.s. no need to hang the entire bike IMO... seems more risky than worthwile... that's a lotta weight that rafters were not designed to hold (if you were only holding one end of the bike much of the weight would still be dispersed to the ground).  just call me master of the obvious.

Before I had a rear stand for my old VFR, I got my fancy Penske shock in the mail.  After fondling it for a couple of hours, I needed more.  I had no help around and I was eager to get it installed.  Here's what I did...this would also work for the rear wheel.
                                                                                ________
Take 2 sawhorses about 4' apart, put a 2X12 across them. /\     /\
Move the bike so the rear end is even with the 2X12.
Zip tie the front brake lever so the bike won't roll.
Say a prayer and lift the rear of the bike so the rear subframe rests on the 2X12.  The rear wheel will be a few inches off the ground.  It's actually pretty stable.  If you've got exposed rafters, you could ratchet it up, if you don't and you're a dumb oaf like me...just heave it up there.

Probably not the most efficient way to do it.  I'm just happy I didn't kill myself and like to brag about it.

You can get a ATV/Riding mower lift cheap.
I need to pick one of these up myself soon...

I guess if the exhaust ran under the bike, and you dont wanna remove it,
you wouldnt be able to use one of these now would ya ? Prob. not... >:(

It is early  ::)
Maybe use two automotive jackstands under whatever clear areas of the frame you
can get too ?

All the suggestions I read are better than this, but, if time and money are tight...
tilt bike onto side stand and block up the frame on opposite side. (tripod it, wheel, stand, block) If you have a garage and its practical, put a tie down on raised side of bike to prevent it going all the way over and tie side stand in down position (front lower engine mount to 'foot') remove whichever wheel your doing first. It can be a bit shakey but it works as long as your careful. Its a really good idea to have someone steady bike while you get wheel in and out but it should be quite happy to sit there as long as your not bumping into it. I have done this on my own a few couple of times, particularly 'on the road'

If you can take 2 jack stands and place on each side of the swingarm.  You'll have to have somelift lift the rear of the bike up though.  Worked for me in a pinch.  You get an adjustable swingarm stand -  that would be the best idea.  Lockart Phillips has one for 50-60 bucks.  works good.
