CB750F electrics - signal flasher location.
« on: April 15, 2006, 09:03:33 PM »
Thanks for the help with the seat lock on my newly acquired 78 750 F. Put the new battery in, drained the tank and carbs and loaded in some new gasoline. It fired right away but will only run with the choke on. Will clean the carbs. In the meantime I have no signal lights. When I turn on the left signal, the left front signal light goes out and vice versa. Nothing happens in the back at all. The signal buzzer buzzes continuously. I am assuming, for starters, that the flasher is at fault and have acquired a new one. So where is the old one located? I have hunted all over and can't find it. The Shop Manual doesn't say where it is either. As usual, your help is appreciated.

Look under the right side cover.  As you look at the bike, near the top right side cover mount hole, you will see a Black and Grey wire pair come out of the wire harness.  Follow it to the flasher unit.  Mine was just resting in the rear mud guard.

The front sigs have two element bulbs for run light and winker.  The rear, one element winker only.  The bar switch turns off the front run light when the winkers are enabled.  They will probably not work with at all with low battery voltage.  New battries need to be soak charged or they will never achieve full potential.
Also, the system voltage ought to be higher with the engine running.  And, the stock flashers work better then.  In the shop, I usually trouble shoot turn sigs with the battery charger attached and operating, and the headlight fuse pulled to keep the battery voltage high. I use either the 2 amp charger or my 6 amp charger, while the ignition switch and electrical load of the bike is engaged.  As long as the batt voltage doesn't get higher than 14.5V it should be okay for troubleshooting purposes. 13.8 is better as that should be about where the system voltage is while riding.

If it's the stock flasher relay in the stock location then it's under the left side cover, as you sit on the bike. Look to the back side of the battery box. You will find it there attached to the top of the battery box. Think above and behind the regulator. You push it inward to release it from the tab holding it. The stock flasher is designed to slip onto that tab. Any non-stock flasher will sit loose. Or you could do what I did when I replaced mine with an electronic unit. I drilled a hole in the tab and attached the flasher relay with a wire pull. Velcro would also work.
