PODs Gone Wild: Totally Uncensored, Totally Unrated!
« on: April 17, 2006, 08:22:32 AM »
Ok, with a subject like that, I am bound to get a lot of thread hits!

Not wanting to open a can of worms here, but I thought I would share my experiences with pods to help out others.  If your not already sick of the Airbox vs pods talk, please read on.

I feel I am pretty darn competent when it comes to carb tuning at this point, but no matter what I had done, my pods experienced turbulence at highway speeds or crosswind (CB750-K2).  Some experience this with their pods, some do not .  I also noticed that most people who had success (experience minimal turbulance) had K&N pods, while, I was using some cheaper (non-oil) ones from crc2onlinecatalog.

So, with the Cycle Recycle pods sitting in the garage, and the stock airbox sitting next to them, I decided to order the $92 K&N pods, at the risk of owning another set of pods that perform no better than the others.  To my delight, the K&Ns worked MUCH better on the highway, and although I experienced a bit of turbulence on a really windy day, it was almost eliminated.

Not trying to dis Cycle Recycle, they are a great, reliable source for parts and VERY friendly, but the pods they carry seem to cause my turbulence related issues, albeit, much cheaper than the $92 K&Ns.

My take home message, K&Ns live up to their hype.  If you notice on their website, they talk about turbulence issues that are eliminated with their pods.  I did not notice that until writing this post.

Take if for what its worth.  I am no pro, just a wanna-be mechanic who has a bit of insight after working on this issue for countless days over the past year!  I am sure there are others who have no problems with the Cycle Recycle pods, but for those of us that do, there are alternative pods that worked for me and maybe you too!

Are the cycle-recycle pods oilable?  Maybe that could correct the issue.  I've got K&N's on my 550F, from the previous owner and I clean and re-oil them about every 2 seasons but never had any issue with crosswind or highway riding.  Seems odd that a generic filter would cause that.  But I'm no pro :)

Nice  ;D

I have been thinking about switching from the stacks I have now, to some pods.
I figure the difference you see is due to the oil in the K&N filter, and the lack of
in the cheaper pods.

K&N does make a good product, weather it be for a motorcycle / car / truck / etc..
When they claim 35+ Horsepower gains I just laugh....

I've never had an issue with K&N filers, but, I did fit a couple of shrouds around top/side them to keep the rain off when parked (outer cylinders) and I also fitted K series side panels to 550 F which cover up about rear 1/3 of filter. When I eventually got jetting sorted out everything worked great.

I am not sure if they are oilable or not. I was thinking about trying them out with some oil.  I recently bought a K&N Cleaning Kit for my car, and I have some extra oil, I may give it a try if I get really ambicious/bored.  :)

OK, I'm a newbie when it comes to Pod filters- I've seen them, and I know what they are for (airbox replacement, better breathing, higher performance, etc.)..  But, what is the turbulence thing?  What happens?  If you get hit by a gust of wind it makes the motor stumble?

Yes, that was what happens.  I am 6'8" too, so I think my leg position really upsets airflow in that region.  Previously (before my K&N fix) I could ride with the wind at highway speeds, but if I turned the bike around on the same stretch of road, against the wind, the bike wouldn't make it above 35-40mph, depending on the severity of the wind.  Also, if I got hit by a cross wind, I would bogg really bad too.  Needle position, jetsize, idle mixture really made no difference, because the drastic change in air flow made it too much to configure for high vs slow speed riding.

hence... the new plastic bikes   ;)  they take all that wind and direct it around the motor.  but, we aren't talking about plastic bikes are we?

often times when people run pods... they design some sort of side cover to deflect the wind... for the cost and time to build a cover, sounds like the k&n's would be the better (and ugly-less)  way to go.   :)

My question is...where did you find K&N's for $92? I got mine from Dennis Kirk and they were $40 a pop! Did I get ripped or is there some place out there givin' em away?

I hear ya.  Best part... no shipping!   ;D

If it makes you feel any better, I bought a stock air filter too, thinking these K&N's wouldn't work.  >:(
