Any Special Trick to Removing Exhaust ??? ??? ???
« on: April 17, 2006, 01:36:41 PM »
Hey ,

This might be a foolish question, but I was once told that the only foolish question is the one not asked, or the one asked over and over and over  ;D

I need to jack up my bike , in order to do the front-end swap (center stand was removed along time ago), and the exhaust which goes under the bike needs to be removed. I have yet to take the pipes off the bike, and am wondering if their are any tricks/tips/advice I should know in order to
get them off without damage to motor / pipes / myself / etc...Pipes need to come off so I can use my new ATV jack to get the bike off the ground....

I remember trying to do this once when I first bought the bike, and having no luck. I loosened up the exhaust clamp / colar, and un-bolted the back mount, and the pipe wouldn't budge.

I allready have 4 new exhaust gaskets, so I am ready to roll, just need to get the damn
things off the bike first, without destroying them in the proccess...

Any advice ?

Hey, you must've read my mind! I'm fixin to pull my exhaust as well so I can slap on that fancy way cool exhaust I picked up from Cycle Xchange off Ebay. Are new gaskets really needed?

It is wise to replace them whenever the pipes come off the bike, as these gaskets are
almost like a crush-washer/one time use deal-e-o....

Once you have loosened the star clamps up front on the headers, you should be able to slide them forward and down the headers some. With the rear mounts removed, you should be able to wiggle them back and forth and ease them off the exhaust collars. No need to remove these unless you are installing some sort of different exhaust. It's a pretty quick removal on my K0 and I'm making an assumption  ::) the K2 would be much the same.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

I have removed and replaced both my 550 exhausts recently. Found it is easier to: 1) Loosen manifold nuts but do not remove completely (nut about flush with end of stud). 2) Remove rear muffler bolt from bracket (leave rear peg and bracket in place) 3) Hold pipe about the front of muffler and remove manifold nuts and drop it down.

When I went to take the header pipes off one of mine,  noticed someone had riveted the pipes to the exhaust flanges.  I just took a small drill bit to it, and the headers came off without taking the flanges or gaskets out.  I don't know if rivets are a factory thing or not, but someone may have done this to yours if they don't just slide off.

Thanks for all the help/advice.
With alittle effort, and some swearing, the pipes came off somewhat easily last night.
Got the bike on the new lift, and the front-end off, & the new one on.
