Coils powered direct from battery?
« on: April 17, 2006, 05:50:47 PM »
I have started work on another project bike; a 1980 Kawasaki KZ550c that a buddy of mine has given me. I found the website www.kzrider.com to almost as helpful as this site has been (what did[/b] we do before the internet).

Anyway, I found an article posted on their website about powering the coils directly from the battery (through a relay) for far improved spark and performance. I was wondering if anyone has done with a CB? He has instructions for both points and electric (yes, even Dyna) ignition systems.

The closer the voltage is to battery potential at the coils, the better the spark will be.
The relay idea seems to be a bypass of all the old corroded connections in the bike's wiring, connectors and switches in path between the battery and the coils.  In that sense, it is effective improvement to the ultimate spark voltage.  However, it still leaves the rest of the bike's wiring, connectors, and switches still corroded and wasting power from the battery and the alternator.  Why not just repair the existing bike's electrical issues to restore factory voltage at the ignition coils?

Yup, that is the same thing they had listed. I was just wondering if anyone had done such a thing to these old Hondas. I guess they have. And from the sounds of thngs, it works!

I probably won't do it to one of my bikes right off untill I get a little more proficiant in the electrics dept... That Kawi is sure testing me right now, though, I'll tell you what...

Stronger spark is always nice. I might do the relay myself but I would still clean all the old contacts. Why waste ANY power.

my major prob was a dicky kill switch, so i just use it to switch the relay now.... was getting a drop across the switch, and no matter what i did to the switch it didnt get any better.... the spark is bloody good now though!!!!..peace
