Sticky Throttle?
« on: April 19, 2006, 09:34:32 PM »
Hey guys

I have a 74 cb550. When the bike is relatively cold (few minutes after start up) the rpms fall right back down to idle after being reved (say, from 5k back down to 1.8k). After being riden for a while though, the same throttle twist will linger and fall slowly. It seams to be directly related to heat, because it 'sticks' a lot worse after driving in traffic than just cruising around. Any insight would be appriciated

I would also like to paint the engine as it is the only part of the bike that doesn't look 'fresh'. Does the spray can engine paint work well or last? Any suggestions?

One more question: After changing both throttle cables there is a lot of play in the handgrip. Any cures for that one???

I appriciaite the help.

Ben

1.  Once the engine has warmed up, turn the throttle stop screw out to bring the idle down.  It's on the right side of the carb bank under the tank.  Also sounds like you need to synch the carbs.

2.  Check the FAQ's and do a search of the forums.  Tons of posts on this subject

3.  There are throttle cable adjustment points at both ends of each cable.  Tighten them up to take up the slack.

It sounds like the cables are not set properly in the bellcrank mounts. Check that they are fully seated and not loose at the carbs.
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.
