SF Bay Area -- Let's Ride!!
« on: May 22, 2011, 02:53:40 PM »
Hey Bay Area!  Let's start a monthly? weekly? ride!  I'd really like to make something happen in San Francisco with the vintage crowd, as there doesn't seem to be anything going on here!?

Anybody interested?  Friday nights?  Saturday nights?  Sunday mornings?

Let's get something going!

'Been thinking about this as well.  I was going to organize something.

But, we need some guidelines.

Ride distance and/or hours riding?

Were you thinking of something in the city or the outlying roads?

Single day event?

I'm kinda surprised by the night riding suggestion.  For me, I don't think I'd like that all that much.

I was thinking about starting out in Hayward and either going south east or north east.  Then looping back toward 80, 880, or 680.

Cheers,

You're probably right about the night riding.  I guess I was thinking more along the lines of a meet up somewhere in the city.  I'd love to see something happen maybe once a month, whether it be a small group ride, a meet up/hang out, or just a few SOHC4'ers shooting the sh1t somewhere.  As far as I'm concerned, all bikes would be welcome, but I'd rather just see vintage motos.

When I started thinking of this, my first idea was to get something like 'coffee n cars' like they have down in LA.  Somewhere vintage riders could get together and start their Sundays..I could think of more than a few places in the city we could make that happen.

Ok.  I see where you are headed.  Good luck with the city meet up.  Not for me, though, that place scares me.  ;D

Does kinda seem more like a gab session than a ride, though.  jk  ;D
Not that there is anything wrong with that!

Well, I'm just brainstorming...I'd be into a 'ride' up or down the peninsula, or even across The Bay...Throw some ideas out there, I'd love to hear 'em.

Ok,
Sean is more familiar with roads northeast of  Hayward than I.  Maybe he'll chime in with some suggestions there.
But, based on whimsy and some familiarity with the roads, I'll suggest a possible route, just to gauge interest. A day trip.

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=hayward+Area+road+map&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x808f9431b601597d:0x70474dec26939c0,Hayward,+CA&gl=us&ei=iKjZTY-LMZK8sQPHqImFDA&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1&ved=0CC8Q8gEwAA

Meet up in Hayward  (Restaurant/park TBD)
Make our way out to Palomar Rd and head southeast to Niles Canyon
East on Niles Canyon out to Sunol.
Pick up Valelcitos Rd into Livermoore  (Possible stop and gab)
Head over to Mines road.
South on Mines road to 130 Junction (There's a place stop and gab/eat/ beer up at Del Puerto Canyon road,  Still there, I think.)
Take 130 up to Mt Hamilton Observatory (stop and take pictures, look outs are nice, on a clear day you can see you home for here !  ;D )
Continue on 130 Down into San Jose.  Link with 680 & go home  (or plenty of eating/resting places in SJ, or jog over to Sierra road and go to Felter Rd.
Maybe Felter to Calaveras, and either go back to 680 for the dash home or more twisties up past the Reservoir back to Sunol/680.
From Sunol; back on 680 or Niles canyon rd back to Fremont.  Head home from there.

That should be a pretty good ride.  Haven't check the time/distance yet.  Could be shortened or lengthened. ...Or another route suggested.

Any thoughts/comments?

Cheers,
Lloyd... (SOHC4 #11 Original Mail List)

Lloyd....those guys are on the other side of the fence (Peninsula).....they would rather have you come over to their playground!!! I have ridden in almost all the places you mentioned(used to live in Fremont/San Jose). I don't think you will coax many of them over to Mt. Hamilton when they are closer to Alice's,Skyline,etc...............just sayin'!!!!

I'd actually like to do the Mt. Hamilton ride at some point.  The Skyline ride is a good one too.  I'd kinda like to mix it up, and see more parts of the Bay Area.  I know Mike (gemini motors) is out in Oakland, and I'm sure we have a few more riders in that area who might be interested in something.  Are there any good rides in the Oakland Hills?

Lloyd, I think you probably like San Francisco as much as I like freeway riding ;)

I may pursue the coffee n bikes idea for the city separately, as I also want something close to home.

Yeah.  Still thought I would offer, though.  I've done the Skyline route many times.  I just thought there might be interest in doing something different.
Driving in the city with the red light runners and angry cage drivers, might be fun if I was allowed to pack heat.   :-\   Just seems too high a risk for my old bones and blood thinned internals.  Still, if you ride motorcycles because you laugh openly at the grim reaper, city driving is a high thrill!   ;D  jk

Perhaps some others could post what their ideal ride would entail?  It doesn't have to be anything I suggested.  But, so far there seems little interest.
That's ok too.  I'll just ride with Greggo, if that's how it works out.

How about this?
If you are interested in a ride of some kind.  Simply state that, and where you are.  Maybe relate the distance/time you have in mind.

For me its: yes, Milpitas, 100-300 miles, or 5-7 hours, the later with stops included, and I'd like to avoid freeways (apart from short connector runs), certainly tolls, and am not interested in street racing.  (But, I don't think I'm a real slow rider, either.)

Maybe we can ballpark/ generalize enough to get something organized?  If not with me, then with others of like intent.

OK guys, is it all we can do to just talk about motorcycles?  ;D

I'd love to ride with you all anywhere but I really can't stand rolling over the Altamont or any super slab in the Bay Area. If you guys set something up that doesn't involve too much of that.....I would love to ride with you but would prefer to trailer over (sounds puss heh??? ::))......people is crazy loco anymore out on the slab and I would prefer a bigger and newer scoot for that action.........still love ole faithful up in the twisties though!!!!.......Lemme know!!!

I would agree, while Mt Hamilton is a fine ride, it is the only ride in the east bay that compares to (or maybe in some aspects better than)  Santa Cruz mountains. I have been riding here since very early eighties. and have ridden most roads in SF Bay, and familiar with many. We do Alice's lunch pretty much every Sunday if the weather is OK, about 11am, then we do a variation of some loop. Would love to see other vintage guys join us.

Roads we like to do are: Pagemill, Tunitas Creek, Stage, Swanton, Smith Grade, Jamison Creek, Alpine, China Grade, Black, Alba, etc.... We avoid, 35/84/9 for other reasons, but those are fine roads as well.

Twotired: your suggested route sounds fun (and close  :)) im in san jose, near milpitas. i ride up sierra rd quite a bit and enjoy mt hamilton rd, but have never been from mines rd.

mrbreeze: trailer your bike if you want to. being from modesto originally, i wouldnt blame you. its a bit of a garbage ride  :D

Greggo: good idea buddy, hope to meet up someday for a ride

I'm glad to see more movement on this thread.  I think there are a whole bunch of us here in the Bay Area, and it feels great to get out and ride with other SOHC4's (or any bikes really).

Lloyd, hopefully these Westerlies calm down in a few weeks, and I won't feel so apprehensive about crossing the San Mateo Bridge.

OK.  Is there a day in the week that work best?  I'm retired so most any day is good for me.  And there is less traffic to contend with during the week if you pick the times right.  But, I can do weekends, too.

If I pick a day to do a short tour, is one day better than the rest?  I think it best to be back by dusk.  Just a druther, for sight seeing.

Weekdays are actually best for me, as they're my only real days 'off'.  For the next month, my best day will be Monday.  Tuesdays can work too, but only earlier in the day.

I like the idea of after Labor Day at this point. I just started a new job and plan on being real busy all summer at work. Labor Day is a ways off so I could make plans for it . I'm game for rolling out to you guys or you can all come my way....whatever!!!!...ridin' is ridin'!!!! ................lets make some plans and see what happens.

Sh1t, I meant Memorial Day.  So, next Monday.  But, if all goes according to plan, I should still be riding a motorcycle after Labor Day too ;)

Is anyone planning to ride in the SF 49 mile ride on 30 October 2011?  It will start/finish at BayView Boat Club,
489 Terry A Francois Blvd, ½ mi south of SF Giants Ballpark.  Ride leaves at 9:30 am sharp.  Your bike has to be pre-75, but I dont think they are checking bike birth certificates.  It might be a good place to rally and get a regular SOHC group ride sorted out for later.  Almost as important, the flyer mentions a BBQ lunch.  I never have done this ride, but it seems well attended.
