It's early, but any plans for Road America this year?
« on: January 04, 2012, 11:47:24 PM »
IMO it's never too early to get excited about heading to the track. I'm usually out there for all of the 4 wheel events and a couple club track days if things are going well with my car, which probably wont be happening this year... Anyhow, I plan to attend the bike events this year as well. I stopped in at RA on a random rainy day when a few guys and gals were running bikes in the fall. Pretty impressive driving and a lot of nice machines were to be drooled over. So, my question is, aside from the major scheduled, advertised events, are there a lot of track days? Does anyone plan on going this year?

Road America is kind of a dull place to do a track day at if you're on an old bike.  Too many long straights.  I'm thinking of having Vanson put a pocket in the front of my racing leathers for a book and a sandwich because I'll be there racing with AHRMA in June.  My crew should be bringing out 3 CB400F's in addition to my CB750.

We've also got a few vintage bike events scheduled for Blackhawk Farms this year.  A track day in May and a race the last weekend of June/first weekend of July.

I do lots of high performance riding and have done a few tds at bhf and ra.. I'm just about half way through my 76 550 project now. I was asked if I was gonna race vintage class but thought isn't that gonna be kinda slow??? Especially like you said at ra which is a balls out track ..do you guys ride trackdays or racedays hard?? I mean is it kneesdown cornering or just basic get up and twist the throttle.  Just curious for future ref. I just can't see doing ra on a 550, maybe bhf but that would be pushing it..I like to gunz out on that track. ;)

I've got a pic of me in the bend at RA on my 1970 CB750 Production Class racer.  Knee down, toe smoking.  Can't share it with you right now because my pic sharing site is under and anti-SOPA/PIPA blackout.

The vintage track days I put together every year attract a mixed bag of racers getting in some practice and more casual street riders sharpening their skills.  Racers are asked to be polite when passing the slower riders but knee dragging has been known to occur.

AHRMA racing?  Some people might question if it's for real racing or not.  We've got some people who don't go very fast and appear to be in it for the beer.  We've also got people on old stuff who put in lap times that would embarass a guy on a modern 600 supersport.

The big problem for a CB550 is that there isn't really a good class for them.  The only thing they're elgible for is Middleweight Superbike where they get destroyed by various 550 and 650cc machines.  That didn't stop a few guys last year though, saw two CB550's racing in that class at Road America.
