CB550 hard tail project for Relay in doubt
« on: May 24, 2011, 05:32:16 PM »
 1974 CB550 four hardtail update:
Just when I thought I could see the end nearing trouble rears it's ugly head.  Believing to have everything buttoned up tight, new gaskets and seals all around. I hooked up some fuel lines and after a few coughs and sputters it did actually fire up. But my joy was short lived when I noticed oil leaking from the seal behind the points plate.
Good thing the kids weren't nearby they would have learned a few new words.  Here I thought my biggest obstacle was going to be custom fitting the headers and exhaust due to the reduced ground clearance but this is a real downer.

I'm ready to scrap it and put the old CB500 motor that's in the back ground in the frame, at least it didn't leak (much). My grumpy side just wants to say F*** it I'm done with it stick with the beamer.

That's a sweet lookin bike man. Keep at it! Don't let a set back like that rip you down too much. Maybe let it sit for a little bit and get back at it in a week or so. Maybe you will be more inspired to tear the engine apart and see what the problem is. Good luck!

A friend is someone who'll get out of bed at 2 am to drive his pickup to the middle of nowhere to get you when you're broken down.

Thanks man, I'd hate to have to tear it down because I just finished putting it all back together and I'm usually very meticulous so this is really eating me up.
Bright side is I finished up the exhaust. I'll leave it a few days and see how I feel.
