CB550F Air Cleaner Questions: Element? Plate Seal?
« on: June 18, 2011, 09:27:21 PM »
I don't want this to turn into a parts request thread I already started in the classifieds ( http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=90974.0 ) but I need some help here. i still consider myself a rookie with this '76 CB550F and I am ditching the pods to get as close to stock as possible. I am missing several parts that seem IMPOSSIBLE to find. the element, and the plate seal that sit at the bottom of the air cleaner are nowhere to be found... anywhere. not in my garage, not on the www. i also don't have the spring that holds the main air filter in place in the box. what should i do? are there any homemade ways around these parts if i can't acquire them?

if no one replies i am in minnesota and im going to sportwheels so i can pick up all those parts.

they have tons of cb550f's so i can pull the parts for you i have a couple things i need too.

since its relatively small a small usps flate rate shipping box should make it cheap.

im not sure what the pricing will be like though there is no set price on stuff. i can txt you a quote and you can throw me a couple dollars for my time  ;)

just a thought

also ebay has this

alright, xsmooth69x did me a huge favor and looked all around sportwheels yard, and found some other stuff i needed, but only found crusty useless plate seals, and foam elements that had turned to powder. Can that foam element be made out of a household material? is the plate seal just a gasket?

are you referring to the main filter element? i am talking about the small square thin one that sits at the bottom of the airbox...

The element foam needs to be an open cell type that can withstand gas and oil without breakdown.

Filter foam could substitute.  The stock foam was denser/ finer than the Uni foam I have.  About 1/4 inch thick.

The retainer spring could be made up, if you can't find one.  Pic attached:

if you look at this diagram (attached), you see what I'm talking about. it's the square foam that goes at the bottom and supposed to filter the breather tube at the bottom I believe. but alas! it's a moot point because although the 5 microfiches I normally use were out of stock of the foam element and the gasket seal, I googled the OE part #'s (who woulda thought?? ???) and the parts turned up at Ron Ayers, where I've bought stuff before (my year/model actually showed out of stock for those parts, but those same part #'s were in stock in other years...not sure how that works ???).

sometimes you gotta just google the part number and see what happens (don't bother googling Bike Bandit's proprietary part numbers btw).

oh and TT, xsmooth69x found the retainer spring piece at that junk jungle in Minnesota and is sending to me. but it looks fairly easy to create on your own anyway.

thanks y'all

I am looking for the same exact piece, though you're lucky and have the part #19, ive been told that for the actual filter element you can replace it with either a cut to fit scotch pad or sos pad. If you have an extra part 19 just tell me where to send the $ its the last piece i need for the airbox

I'm still missing part 19 and the spring. I just turned the filter element upside down and taped over the hole. Then used a piece of plastic door shim from Home depot to keep the element in place. Seems to work fine. Unless you're going for museum or collectible quality I don't think that whole crank vent set up does much anyway, as far as runability.

Someday I'll find the right parts but at least I'm out riding the bike (when the weather isn't crappy!)
