Here's a little test: what do these tach gauges have in common?

If you answered "they're missing their red zones", you win the no-prize.

I've seen a lot of tachs in this condition; the gauge faces are perfect except that the "danger zone" paint has faded to leave a white wedge in its place. Full-face decals are available, but after snapping my second needle stem attempting to remove the needle, I started wondering if there might be an easier way to go about it.

After considerable thought, I came up with a solution. Why replace the whole face when the "red zone" is the only problem? I looked into several ways of accomplishing this and finally developed a vinyl sticker that can be applied to the tach face. It is 1.5 mil thick, made of an outdoor type vinyl (think bumper stickers and parking meter stickers) and printed with a UV resistant ink that is guaranteed for five years with constant exposure, so I reckon it will last a good long time on our bikes.

Here's what we all have right now

The "kit" consists of the "Red Zone" and two small nylon washers

Just cut the sticker out...

...align it with the tach (no need to remove the needle)...

...add the little washers...

...and there you have it; a tach that looks like new (fluorescent orange paint for the needle tip not included). I've had one of these directly exposed to the elements for three months and the red zone still looks like brand new. The adhesive is of a type that strengthens with time; when I went to remove the test sticker, it came off in patches, so adhesion over time is not a problem...

In fact, it almost makes this old, nasty faded blue face look usable (this was my aforementioned "test" face)

I am planning to sell these on ebay, but I'm offering a set of one sticker and two washers to anyone reading this thread who is willing to give it a try. Just PM me, and I'll sent a kit out for evaluation purposes

Why go through life without a "danger zone" to make things more interesting?

Let me know if you're interested

Cool idea. It's one of those things that seems so obvious in retrospect that you wonder why it didn't already exist.

The red zone RPM range would be different for different models.  I imagine if Ron can produce this one he will be able to eventually produce others in their proper ranges.

Makes me wonder, too

Would it fit other models?

Cb550 is all I have now, but I'm working on one for the '750 and would be willing to do more if I can get the face to work off of.

How much to ship one my way?

Like they say, the first one is free. PM me an address

Any real need for the washer?

The little screws have a serrated bottom that causes the vinyl to bunch up when they're tightened, and the washer eliminates that. Thickness is .031, so there's plenty of room between needle and screw when it's installed

Agreed ... nicely done.

I've always been a big fan of simple solutions.

That badly fade one though is a good example that it won't work too well on every faded face.

Well, miracles are hard to come by! That old face would never work anyway, so it's great for a test bed.

Anyone have a spare face for any of the other models they're wiling to lend for a while? I'd love to make more styles available.

Thanks for all of the great responses and to all of you who have PM'd me (Wow!)  :o  requesting kits. I only had a small quantity of the "Red Zone" stickers made up and they're going fast, so if you might like to try this out give me a PM soon, 'cos there isn't a guarantee you'll get one at this point.

Thanks, again to all who have responded; I should have all of the kits out by mid-week, so please be patient.  :)

And, again, if anyone has a spare face for any of the other bikes they can lend it would be great to be able to cover more models

Sorry, Ryan, but I've been busy and haven't had a chance to get to all of the messages. Response has been far greater than I anticipated and I've kind of been inundated with e-mails, so if you haven't gotten an answer to your PM yet rest assured that I will send you a kit ASAP.

As I wrote earlier, I've been pretty surprised by the volume of requests, and the initial test run of "Red Zone" stickers is now spoken for. I'd like to ask all respondants to let me know via PM or this thread what their experiences were installing the sticker, suggestions for improvements, etc. I'm especially interested to hear how well they hold up in the "Real World", though I feel pretty confident they should be good for years...

Thanks, again to all who requested kits.

The only downside? Now I have to take the other side apart to paint the tip with my sharpie!

Thanks for the excellent review, Cameron! I'm glad this worked out for you; the CB550 kit will be available to everyone soon.

And, TrueSpin, the CB750 kits are being produced even as we... er... speak, as it were. Keep your eyes open as I'll most likely be announcing them in the next week or so.

The 750 kit is a three way kit in that it covers several versions of the guages that came with these bikes, including sandcast. In addition, the kits include the "70 mph" stripe for the speedometer, so both guages can be restored.

The redline on mine is actually higher than that, though... I think the redzone on mine starts at 9500, and it doesn't have the 70mph stripe either. It's a 78 750F... I thiiiiiiink my gauges are different.
