1973 Honda CB 500K2 carb problem again
« on: June 27, 2011, 11:59:18 AM »
After much work my carbs still overflow out the overflow tubes. here's what i have done
1. disassembled and cleaned thoroughly
2. installed new main and pilot jets
3. New float needles and seats
4. Checked for cracks in bowl overflow tube
5. Set float level by removing bowl and holding it on the carb with the gas on and checking fuel  level
6. installed new fuel lines with inline filters

I am at the end of my working knowledge this is my final plea for a possible solution . What have I overlooked ?

May sound stupid, but are your drain screws screwed all the way in?

try lowering the height,to adjust the float you raise it till the tang just touches the little pin, dont let it take up that tiny little spring pressue within the needle!the needle should be seated just, but not compressing the damper springs action.

I think I got it . One of the fuel lines was loose creating a leak between the carbs fixed that ,still had #4 overflowing removed the bowl held it in place by hand turned on the fuel and no leak. I loosely put the bowl back on and held it in place with my hand and tightened it . Turned on the gas no leak for 10min or so . Did a test ride and it was fine.  Who knows tomorrow. But today I'm da man 8) Thanks for all the replies.

d.bob.... I'm sorry but your weird method of checking the float height ( fuel height by your method ) is not getting it, Firstly the carb bowl needs to be 'sealed' to the body ( by the gasket ) and the float height must be adjusted with the carbs off the bike and held sideways so there is no 'weight' on the float needles. Impossible to know if your bowl level is too low or ( seems like it ) too high producing leaking fuel and waaaay rich running  ;) :) :)
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
If your sure it's an ignition problem; it's carbs....

Well, it may be a weird method but I have used it on other bikes and it works . I appreciate your post and you are right about the proper method but if it works and the bike runs right I can't argue with that. Thanks
