Problematic Petcock
« on: April 26, 2006, 04:39:21 PM »
Greetings all!
I need some advice on a fuel tank petcock ('78 750F). A little background. The bike died on me the first time I attempted to ride it in to work (the boss came to my rescue - how embarrassingĀ  :-[ ). It acted as though it were out of fuel but switching to "reserve" didn't help. I found that the tank was indeed low and that the "reserve" hole in the valve was blocked by a deteriorated rubber seal. I tried putting in an o-ring but it split. I tried no washer at all (just used teflon tape) but the valve, of course, leaked. I got it home and cut down a rubber washer to fit. That seemed to work - for a couple of weeks. When my reserve didn't work again the other day, I took it apart and the rubber washer again was smashed down into the hole.

I don't know if this is the original petcock. It doesn't have screws (like I've read about in other posts and in the Clymer's manual) but rivets holding it together. I can post pictures if needed.

What kind of seal should be in there? Would I be better off just replacing the whole valve? Is aftermarket better than stock?

I have made several seals that go between the tap and the tank. The first one was made from a fibre(red) washer, suitably modified and the second was punched from insertion rubber. Both worked fine. Make sure there is no material proturding into the centre.
My tank petcock leaks slightly and I would like to fit a replacement seal.
I have seen a petcock modified by drilling out the rivets and tapping a thread. The person told me the seal is available to replace, as it is also used on another Honda. He could not tell me the model Honda though and I did not get his name.
A used one is a possibility, but there is no guarantee that it will be better than the one in the tank
Hopefully someone on this website will have the part number.

Thanks, Clyde!
I figured I had the right idea just maybe not the right material. When I made the rubber washer it fit nicely. But I didn't take the "squish factor" into account.

Is there any certain material the washer should be made out of? I don't know if gasoline will eat away rubber/neoprene.

Thanks again
