No spark
« on: July 27, 2011, 10:19:55 AM »
I have a CB750K2 the bike sat for three years.  I threw a new battery in and started it right up.  Then I washed it and cut the chain off.  I accidentally took off the trans cover getting to the chain cover.  I put it back together and now I can get the plugs to spark.  I checked the input wires to the coils and im getting + going in and - when the points hit.  I tried grounding the coil with the spark plug laying on the cylinder head ans saw a light spark.  Put it back together again and still no spark.  Any sugestions.

If you took the trans cover off, it's very possible that the wires coming from the stator might have loosened themselves.
Take the cover off and check those connections.  Might as well clean them while you're at it - they get pretty crusty in there.  Doesn't take much.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

That plus make sure you didn't get your points wet when you washed it.

It's very possible this happened.  It's happened to me before and I was going insane trying to figure out why the charging system wasn't working, but disconnecting the stator won't cause the bike to lose spark, it just won't charge.

Thats what I thought.  How can you test a coil?

I wouldn't be suspicious of the coils.  They rarely fail and it's even less likely that they'd fail at the same time.  Chances are either something got wet in the washing that shouldn't have or some other wiring came loose or just has a bad connection or ground.

What voltage are you getting going into the coils?  If it's close to 12V then look to the points and wiring to the points.  Could also be a bad ignition switch that only caused the problem after getting wet.
