Blackend carbs with Simple Green--How to fix?
« on: June 28, 2011, 10:28:13 AM »
I am trying to get a CB350F going again.  It sat since the eighties--so decades.  The carbs were some of the worst I have ever seen inside--let alone try to clean up to use.  Choke, throttle slides, floats, everything froze solid.  The jets Won't come clean with soaking or compressed air--have nothing small enough (& strong enough to unclog).  I had to use a drill bit & turn it by hand to clean out the bowl drain screws.  Anyway--I can handle all that but I have this problem.  I soaked the carbs in undiluted Simple Green overnight & that was a mistake.  They are clean but BLACK.  Obviously corroded the aluminum.  Anyway to fix this without breaking the rack & sandblasting or something?  I tried hitting them with my soda blaster but for the time & effort involved it does not work.  Any ideas?

You have to be careful with solvents around the pot aluminum used on these carbs, I would not recommend leaving them in any solvent overnight. Make sure you watch the process as it happens.

Use "conventional" carb dip in the gallon cans with the dip basket.  My favorite is Gunk brand.  It smells nasty and is super $$$ but it does the job.  Does a better job on that varnish buildup than Simple Green, too.  It will damage rubber and plastic bits, though.  But, it sounds like you're looking at some replacement stuff being needed anyway.
