I put the end of the insert in a vice, made it slightly out of round, then hammered it in.  I can still get it out with some pliers if I have to.

Standard fiberglass pipe insulation (say, Owens-Corning), that you should be able to pick up at your local Home Depot is rated to 850F.  Verify what whatever they have on the shelf is rated to, but it should be able to handle the temperature.  The condensation is another subject, but I don't think you're making this for the long-haul so it shouldn't matter.  You may want to bake it in outside, as I don't know what sort of fumes will be puked out at first.

But where will the chickens stay now?

This reminds me of my first pickup that had a rusted exhaust & wouldn't pass inspection.  My father was an Army Ranger in WW2 and had a bunch of huge shell casings from a howitzer or something.  He gave me one that I cut and clamped on to my tailpipe.  The brass polished up nice and it was a good conversation piece.  Went along well with the modified Budweiser "tall boy" can that doubled as a heat riser to my air filter.  I miss that truck.

tsflstb,

Can you take a few more pics of your setup.  I just got a 4-1 Mac exhaust and a tip like that would be perfect and nice and cafe like.

ok I am excited as I founf a cool exhaust tip that slid right on my 4 into 1 AND I went to home depot & got a steel pipe, some stuff that is similar to glass pack & some plumbers tape (that flexible metal strip which has holes in it). So now it looks cool & I have a homemade glasspack! It was really easy & NO welding involved. But I went over budget - I spent around$50 for everything. That fiberglass #$%* was expensive. I'll post photos tomorrow...

i bought a $7.95 slip-in baffle from my local parts shop (but the same thing is available everywhere. wrapped it with the glass that came with it, stuffed it into a 1.75" pipe which i had a local muffler shop bend at the angle i wanted and make the flange for it to slip on my header. then had them tack weld on a chrome exhaust tip over the end. looks great, sounds awesome, and isn't anywhere near as loud as i thought it would be. deep, but muffled. total cost for baffles, tip, pipe, and muffler shop labor: $47. more expensive than the cheap slip-ons, but i think it looks better.

Damn I just took off that tip after a ride & the fiberglass stuff seems to be too soft. The exhaist bunches it up towards the end of the tip. Kind of like if you took your sock & pushed it as far as you could all the way down your ankle. I need to find actual glass pack that will stay wrapped around the pipe. Where can I get glass pak?

Hey there Ive made baffles outta vacum cleaner tubes beer cans tomato soup cans what ever but  I have a junk steel pile beside my garage now you could go to your local car parts store up here VIP has just what you need  and here is an Idea take an old vacum cleaner tube cut to length  drill holes to get the right sound and just squat one end a bit no stuffing needed (sounds like a recipie) then a bolt or two to hold it in place  and just to let all know I run a KERKER now and no baffle just the cone piece in the end runs and sounds awsome    (no beer can or vacum tube that was 30 years ago good luck  Craig seven fifty four ever
