Ok, Its about time I put up a thread on my bike "The Jones Special."

So here we go:

I got the bike last summer (2010) as a high school graduation present to myself.
It wasn't expensive. 

Here's a picture of the bike when i first got it. (Minus the seat that was on it when I bought it.)



So I started by buying a manual.

Then I pulled the motor and took it to a friends machining shop for a check and rebuild. I had spent about a week trying to unfreeze the motor, but time would tell that my piston ring where frozen to the cylinder walls. So a full set of gaskets and piston rings later, I should have it back soon.

The next step, once I have it, then I'm going to go ahead and check the transmission, and all that fun.
Apart from that, iv been working on cleaning up the carbs. They should be getting a full rebuild soon.

So that brings us up to date on the power plant. Now on to the rest.
I stripped everything off the frame except the kickstand, and I'm going to have it blasted and powder-coated. (Soon)
I didn't even try to save any of the wires. Most of them had been worn through, and it was a mess. I bought a new, more simple, wiring schematic offline. It to was very cheap. Six dollars I think. It looks solid, but only time will tell.
Em currently planning on replacing as much of the electronics as I can, but I'm still ironing out the kinks in my plan, so I'll save that topic for another day.

Any other parts I thought i wanted to use, I went ahead and sand blasted and painted them. Been using a lot of Rustoleum Enamel, and I'm hoping it all works well.

A couple picks of the Speedo and Tach, 'cause i think they came out really well considering how bad they where



and the exhaust manifold; stock pipes, with the muffler pulled off. Blasted and blacked. I'll have to change it out eventually, but it'll work for now.  8)


And finally a couple of my "rear assembly" iv still got a few thing to do, but it looks a helluva lot better than it did.



So that bring us up to speed on the whole project right now!

Welcome to the forum jones. Coming along really good. Excellent project for you. I did the K4 a couple years ago and I wanted to mention it looks like the gauges are flipped. The K4 had the speedo on the left and tach on right. Keep the pics coming for us... :D

No biggie...you would have figured it out when you put them on. Just wanted to save you some aggravation. Nice looking paint job on the items. Did you have the ugly king/queen seat like mine did? Man it looked ugly on mine when I got it. And so many previous owners put them on the bike back then. Guess it was a confort item. Mine actually had a Corbin k/q on it so it was quality.

I don't know, the seat was a one piece with a high pointed back, i cant even find a picture of one.
Sufficed to say, it's wierd. I'll post a picture next time i get a chance.
Yeah, iv heard those corbins are nice. But I plan to make my bike as uncomfortable as possible.  ;)

Little bit of progress today. Chopped the hoop on the back of the frame. Im having a bit of trouble deciding wether I should cut the frame right behind the shock mounts, or leave a few inches.



I'm feeling a little crazy. I just cut off part of the frame.

Shelby Charger. Very cool. I was a big fan when those came out, although I prefer the Omni version. For a few years in the early 90's I drove a Charger 2.2. Other than non-working A/C, it was a fun, reliable, comfortable car.

I had a 81 Dodge Charger 2.2 back in the Day. It was a great car, I  beat the crap out of that car!

Yep, I wouldn't mind having the omni GLHS, (i think they're lighter). But I'm pleased with the charger 'cause i have a thing for "ugly" cars.  :D
I'll post a pic when it gets out of the shop.

Anyway, back to the CB750:
Ground all the "extras" off the frame last night/this morning. including the old seat hinges, and the main-stand mounts.
I also went ahead and ground out some of the defects in the factory welds. not much, just a few beads of spatter here and there.

Now I need to decide how to attach the seat I'm building. I've an idea, but we'll see.

Motor is done. Going to pick it up later today.
Clean up and paint is on my agenda.

The frame is still in the works.

I've been cleaning on the motor on and off for about three days. Starting to make some real progress, but I'm having a little trouble getting all of the fins clean enough to paint.

Still working on cleaning the fins. Got the Valve Cover cleaned and painted, kind of like a test area, I used Duplicolor motor black "Low Gloss," then i put a clear coat over it. I think the clear coat was a mistake. It looks good, its just to damn shiney.

CRX, whatever you decide to do with the rear of the frame, IMHO, you might want to bridge those shock mounts...  ;)  RR

The k bikes did not come with a 4 into 1 pipe stock. the one you have is aftermarket

yeah, i figured the previous owner must have done some mods to the bike. I had a feeling the exhaust isn't original, and i know the velocity stacks aren't. I think he might have jetted the carbs too, but im not quite ready to figure that out yet.

Got done with the motor cleanup early this morning. Put the first coat of paint on as well. Pictures when its all painted + pretty.

Finally got some spark plugs. So the cylinders are finally closed for what's probably the first time in 20 years.

New parts at home, waiting patiently for my attention.


Carb Re-Builds for a 1974 CB750 and a Master Cylinder Re-Build for a 1975 GL 1000

All Balls Steering Bearings and a rather nifty spark plug wrench from vintagecb750.com

And a new, and improved rear wheel for The Jones Special.

So apart from the new parts, progress is slow. I somebody else is working on the frame now and I'm hoping she'll be done and ready for paint this weekend. Hopefully this fall break, I'll get a chance to rebuild the carbs and finish the front end. And maybe, if everything works out, The Special will be a roller by the end of the month.
