Bobbing fenders.
« on: April 29, 2006, 11:37:15 AM »
I thought I'd go out to the shop and bob my rear fender a bit since it's raining anyway. For those of you who have done this, what did you use? I was going to dremmel it. Did you turn over the edge of the fender? Any quick advice would be appreciated.

I haven't done this yet, but I saw another website where a guy made a new rear fender using fiberglass, where he used his stock metal fender for the mold.  He then bobbed the fiberglass one- it was probably a lot lighter too.  Sounds neat, and I was thinking of doing it that way..

You could use a cutting wheel or hack saw and then die grinder to sand it down alittle if on the bike or a belt sander.

I used an air grinder with a 3" cutoff wheel to rough it in.  Belt sanded the finished shape.  Are you planning on painting this when you're done?  It's gonna rust otherwise, and besides, I was going to suggest you weld on a piece on the underside instead of trying to fold it over.  I made a 1/2" wide piece that I welded to the edge where it was cut.  Smooth ground the edge and painted it.

I'm working on one now.  I'm using the end of the fender so it looks finished.
I drilled out the brace/bracket used a cutoff wheel to trim it from the rest of the fender, I'll weld everything together next weekend and post a few pics when I can.

ive done a few, both front and back. i've used a dremel with a cutoff wheel  and an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel. the angle grider is obviously faster, and the dremel more accurate.

i like the angle grinder better. i get close to the line with the cutoff wheel. then use a grinding wheel to get it into the proper shape. then clean it all up with a hand file.

i dont put a turned over edge on it. i've also never painted them. i leave the chrome, then carefully brush some clearcoat on the edge. i've been using them for a few years like this and havent had any rust.

you can see it somewhat in these pics
