1976 cb550 with 650 front end conversion question
« on: July 18, 2011, 09:38:42 AM »
hi there,

I have started to rebuild a 76 cb550 and needed to replace a bunch of parts on the front brake system...so I found a guy that had a complete front brake setup from a 79 cb650

After some research it seems that the forks are good to go (although they seem a tad bit taller), the rim size is the same, however the rotors are not...meaning I will have to put a 650 rotor on if I want it to work properly...now here is my dilema and I am hoping that someone can give me some suggestions...

The CB550 rotor is a 6bolt and the cb650 is a 5 bolt...therefore the 550 hub will not work to mount it...can I just switch out to a cb650 spoked hub? (would be preferable) or do I need to switch to a comstar rim?  or is there any other work arounds...

any suggestions are appreciated!

Did you already buy the 650 stuff? This is why you need to be carefull about buying stuff made for different models, or in some cases different years of the same model.

550 brake stuff isn't that hard to come by.

The base 650 did come with a wire wheel, so you might be able to use it on your bike. The question is does it have the same hub spacing and axle size? My guess is that it does. But if not, you may have to do some modifying to get it to fit right.
