You do know the engine has to come out to pull the head? (unless you have a frame kit).

Yes, kinda sux but I think I have to.  We'll see how it shakes out.  I certainly can't run it like it is.

  I've decided to pull the motor out of this bike.  It's been sitting around while I work and finish my 650.  I'm making a ton of progress on that bike but I still want to be able to ride this bike this coming summer.  While the bike has sat around I've noticed that it's dribbling oil in a few places.
  Pulling the motor and getting it up on the bench at eye level will make it that much easier to tighten up all the oil leaks and clean the motor up real nice.  One thing that's important to me right now is that I don't spend any cash on this bike until I have the 650 completed.

I received my wire harness today.  I inspected it and spot checked it against the wiring diagram I have in my service manual. Everything I looked at matches and the crimps all look nice. 



Tomorrow night I'll take an hour or two and put it on the bike.  I'm working everyday 8 to 5 for the forseeable future so I have less time now to wrench.

I bought one of those 1975 wiring harnesses too.
I was such a great help in restoring the bike.
I put my 1975 harness on my 1978. It works great.
It matched right up to the engine/alternator harness too.
I am really glad someone out there made this happen.
I hope they keep making them.

As far as I am concerned it was a good deal and it saved me hours of work. Now all of the factory plugs are brand new. Looks very nice.
BTW... save the old harness and if you have to extend wires for turn signals etc., you can get the matching color coded wire from your old harness .

That old harness is worth saving. I keep a box of just wiring parts that has helped me out over the years.

I'm a dumb a$$.  I even knew there was a gasket there, I just didn't get that it went all the way into the tranny.  I only lost about 8 - 12 tablespoons.
  I've been watching her leak oil onto the floor for awhile now.  Since I DID declare war on oil leaks and the 650 leaks are all tackled I figured I'd check this one out.

Dreaded RTV sealant.  The shifter slid right off the shaft.  I could see the oil flow as I pulled it off.  I ordered the shifter seal and the gasket.

The tank for this bike is going to be my test tank on the 650 until I get it painted.  I wanted to post the petcock pics here because eventually that tank and valve will end up on this bike.

 Found this gem while I was draining the oil to do the shifter cover gasket and seal.  It's was "threaded" into that nasty helicoil.  It cocked over to about 70 degrees as soon as I cracked it.
  Luckily the only pieces of ferrous material in the pan were those two chunks that had broken off of the helicoil.

The exhaust flange screws in cylinders 2 and 3 are seized bad enough that I twisted the bit in my impact driver trying to extract them.  I tried to drill one out and missed pretty badly.   I went ahead and pulled the motor and got started getting my donor motor broke down.

  Fun stuff.  What started out as swapping out the 4 pin female connector on the ignition switch turned into a complete rehab of the switch.  The red and black wires were nicely boogered up. 

Complete disassembly and clean up. I used regular "axle" grease on the mechanical parts and dielectric grease on the contacts. The red and black wires were replaced and the original weather boot was reused.  I do have tendency to cheat in favor of shrink tubing where black sleeving is used.
