AWD is sweet!  I love it when it snows and I'm sitting at a traffic light.  The light turns green, the other cars just start spinning their tires and I take off like I'm on dry pavement. 8)

Our old die-hards

Our everyday driver is the 1997 Mazda Protege, and our cottage car(my wife's baby) is a 1995 Land Rover Discovery. Both have over 250 000 kms and still run awesome!!

For me it's a 97 chevy cavalier Z24.  It was free to me so I can't complain, needs a little work, but hey it fires up everyday and gets me to work.  Used to have a 99 S10 4X4, but I took care of that last winter when I wrecked it in a icy curve.

Also had an awesome 96 Mercury Cougar XR7.  Wish to hell I hadn't sold that car.  Also had an 86 VW Golf diesel, even though the engine was worn out it still got over 40 miles to the gallon.

A friend has a cavalier he just replaced but is still stuck with.

Never know, the z-24 may become desireable for reasons we cannot understand at this point ,  like in  a cosworth vega sort of way.

I can only hope that it might become valuable someday!!  I don't think anyone is gonna want this one though, it spent most of it's life in Buffalo NY and it's pretty rotten on the bottom and the doors too.

Indy, how do you like the MINI?
I drove an '08 Cooper (not an S) for 2 years as a work car, put 86k km (about 55k miles) on it, and we had to trade it due to rattly engine, unpredictable handling (or predictably bad), a couple of recurring electrical issues and general disappointment. It was regularly serviced and never abused. It was wheel aligned several times and tyres changed to different brands, but it would tram track and bump steer like crazy, and in the wet was scary. I have heard others complain of the same thing.

Pity, as I really like the look and it looked good parked next to my old Mini. Hope you're not having similar issues, but would be interested to hear of your experiences.

Got a 99 Honda C-RV AWD 5-spd. Absolutely love it. Like you guys said, the thing just doesnt stop in the snow. And has the more desirable B20 motor in it. Breaks em look in 1st rolling. Plus I can haul a bike with it. All than I need! Sadly no pics. Not much to look at (yet) anyways.

Hey Peter.

I love the MINI.  This is actually my second one...my first was a first gen '06 non-S Cooper.  I haven't experienced any of the issues that you describe, although there are a number of known issues with these cars (like any other car, though).  These second gen turbo cars like my '08 have their share of timing chain tensioner issues (commonly referred to as the "cold start rattle" or "death rattle").  I did have that pop up a year or so ago during the winter, but it was taken care of under warranty with a new design tensioner and has not come back since.  The other issue with these turbo MINIs (and several BMWs actually) is faulty high pressure fuel pumps that are used on these direct injection engines.  I haven't had any issues and MINI/BMW has extended the warranty to 100K miles on that particular part.

I find that the handling has just been fantastic on both of my cars.  I have heard that the control arm bushings in the front end tend to get soft in pretty short order and can result in the issues that you describe (vague steering, etc).  It's possible that you may have had bad bushings and they were never diagnosed properly?

There's bound to be a lemon here and there and maybe you got one.  I found VWs to be that way.  I had a couple that just kept having issues....and VW service just seems to suck terribly (or did when I owned one).  I you love a car, though, you tend to put up with more quirks than you probably should and that's what I did in that instance.

Used to be a 'petrolhead' years ago.... now could care less about 4 wheels.. funny how that happened as I gained a few years  ;)... Had a Triumph TR6 ( wire wheeled, rare ! ).... now a Ford van with 249,000 miles ( original motor and transmission )..maybe my crazy driving ideas have some merit !!!
'Sweetie' drives a V.W. Passat ... juries out on it yet, as far as I'm concerned.... a lot of electronic controls with 'luxury' priced fixes if they go bad... INO.

I have a S-10 truck to haul stuff. When not driving the truck I drive my Pontiac.

Before my truck I drove this as a daily.

I have to admit that it wasn't very reliable which is why I bought the truck. (it also wouldn't haul a motorcycle.

I drove this for 2-3 years as a daily before the Pacer. Someone came along and wanting it mre than I did.

Before that I also had a wagon.

I'm considering getting rid of the truck and getting another wagon and a trailer.
