Can a rechargeable sealed battery be used in a 750f
« on: May 03, 2006, 02:19:57 PM »
I have a rechargeable sealed lead acid 12v battery that may fit in the cb750f,, the rating for the battery is 12v 20ah, is this ok to use for the bike, or should I just go with a normal bike battery.

will the higher rating of the 20ah damage wiring ??? or create any dangerous conditions ??

I can supply more details of the battery if required

It came out of a mobility scooter - they are charged via an external charger that plugs to a 240v 10amp outlet.

thanks for your replies

I don't know what battery you've got, but you can use a sealed battery in your bike.  The Westco AGM battery in my '75 750F is on its sixth year and is going strong.  It is an absorbed gas mat battery, completely sealed and maintenance free.  I live in Idaho, and it gets hot in the summer.  It gets over 100 degrees in the garage for much of the summer and I was constantly having to check and top off electrolyte levels in my bikes.  A while back, I had a lot more bikes, so it was a hassle.  I have Westco batteries in my CBR1000F and R100GS that are the same age as the one in the 750.  Besides being maintenance free, the AGM batteries have a slow self discharge rate compared to wet batteries.

Here's the website if you want to check them out -

Any reason a trad. charger, such as a Batt Tender can't be used with these?

Asking because they seem to be peddling their own that appears to function like a Batt. Tender, but pretty pricey. Didn't know if there were something unique about these sealed units that required something special.

No.  The Westco site recommends a smart type charger for their batteries.
