New filter restricting?
« on: May 03, 2006, 03:52:52 PM »
Ok I don't want to go down the JETTING issue but...

1. Jardine? mufflers
2. Home made filter element  out of a mower foam filter

With NO filter the bike just screams! ;D But with a NEW foam element installed it just boggs out on full throttle. >:(
also idle is strained with the filter in.
So I believe the intake is being restricted. I'm guessing that forking out the bucks for an origional filter would agrivate the problem.
I think the jets are origionals? Other than jetting down any suggestions? if I have to jet down, how much smaller will I need to go roughly?

Open cell foam can be made with different sized bubbles.  Smaller bubbles would make for a good filter as it would trap smaller particles.  However, this comes at the expense of restrictive flow characteristics.

Most mowers aren't known for their high RPM large gulps of air at their intakes.  Certainly nothing like a CB550 at 8000 RPM.  And all the mower foam I've seen has a fairly small bubble size which would act like partial choke to a high RPM engine.

The Uni filter has rather large Air bubble foam and breathes quites well.

Why don't you use a Uni air filter?  It should have restrictive characteristics much closer to that of no air filter.

Good point! mowers rarely run in excess of 4000.
I'v never seen a UNIFILTER. Where do I get one?

For performance, try a K & N. Oil very lightly, let it drain off for 24-48 hours, then install. All the gauze should be barely pink when it's right.
That'll wake it up!
See SOHC4shop.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

I bought mine at http://www.denniskirk.com/ but they're available all over.  The filter ($25) and a can of the oil ($5) & cleaner ($8) totalled $44 including shipping ($6).
