Topic: Weird ticking

Got the 75 550F running but the left side, at least I think its from the left side is making a weird ticking noise. Please do not mind the video quality as I had to play with the throttle and record at the same time.. Any suggestions with the noise? Not sure but it seems like the noise lessens when driving but I am not sure since the muffler is shot. I can make another video tomorrow if a better quality video is needed. I was thinking maybe the enormous hole in the muffler could be a cause to the noise???

Vrruum, tappet, tappet, tappet, vruum, tappet, tappet....... Tappet needing adjustment, usually gets quieter as the motor heats-up.... IMO.

k, I have the manual out right now but its for the 74 F... Does it matter? On page 45-46 it tells the process, just follow it? That is of course once I am able to purchase the gauges... Should I not run the bike with the tappet adjustment needed? What does IMO mean?

You really are kidding about IMO, right ??... ( In My Opinion ).... I would set the tappets before running the bike anymore, the process for a 550 F would be just the same , so O.K. there. Take your time and follow the instructions step bt step.... good luck

You can localize the noise using aquarium tubing.
Put one end in your ear and use the other end as a probe to find the loudest emanation point.

Could be and exhaust flange leak, A tappet, or spark jump (leak) based on what I hear.

Yeah, when I had dyna fiber wires connecting to the spark plugs and it burned through and was making poor contact my 750 make a ticking sound. Yanked 'em off and replaced them with new solid copper core wire. Check the wire ends also.

Vrruum, tappet, tappet, tappet, vruum, tappet, tappet....... Tappet needing adjustment, usually gets quieter as the motor heats-up.... IMO.

Weird, my 550 has a very similar albeit quieter ticking noise.  I feel like it just started in the last 3 weeks.  I have been trying pretty had to diagnose it and have been having a hard time.  I am starting to feel like its the primary hitting the case but I dont know.  In my case the noise seems like its coming from the left side towards the bottom.  Sometimes I think it goes away, especially when rev's get higher.  Once I am on the road going 2-3K I dont hear it at all over the exhaust.  I have changed my mind on what I think the noise is about 5 times now.  Tracing it with a long screwdriver to my ear I hear it the most with the screwdriver on the drive chain (in neutral.)  I have the carbs synced as best as I can get them with vacuum sync gauges.  I am getting to the total loss point.  Although with my many years experience with cars, the explanation is near!  Keep me posted on your findings.
