Is this part of the airbox? '71 CB500
« on: August 10, 2011, 07:34:39 AM »
Putting together a '71CB500 that is missing most of its nuts and bolts. Literally. Can't tell y'all how many trips I've had to make to Home Depot.....   >:(

So of course all the hardware for the airbox is missing too, but I did find this piece. Is it #10 in the diagram below? And if so, where exactly does it go? Inside lower front? Is that where the line is pointing?

Yep, I reckon you're right there. #15 in this pic. The pic is for 550F

Yes, it goes inside the air filter housing and attaches it to the airbox.  If you look down in the air filter housing, right under the opening into the airbox, there are two raised lines flanking a bolt hole.  The flanged part goes between those lines and is supposed to be held still while you tighten the bolt from the outside.

So I have the screw in backwards then (in the pic above)?

No, the screw isn't backwards.  The flat part of the flanged thing goes against the inside wall of the air filter and the screw (bolt, actually) comes in from the outside.  Once you get the airbox and filter housing in front of you it will be straightforward.

I don't know about the 500, but on my 550, I had to assemble the air filter housing and airbox in place on the bike.  At first I assembled it on the bench and tried to cram it where it goes but it wouldn't go.  Maybe I was lacking spacial orientation skills that day but I had to take it apart and do it in place.

LOL - thanks for the tip! :) Did you do that before or after you installed the carbs?

Before.  With the carbs in place there isn't enough room to get the airbox in or out.
