cam chain install - out a tooth
« on: August 20, 2011, 06:44:24 AM »
When reassembling a cam and chain, how do you know you have the right link on the right tooth and your not outatooth?

Also, what are the symptoms of outatooth?

What are they for a worn chain?

Thanks

If it is out just one tooth it'll still run, just with really poor performance.

I assembled the top end this spring and lune up the cam etc.....but i wslas able to move link forward or backward on the cam, just walked it over a tooth, which is the reason for the question.

Would i want to walk the links back over the cam gear so that all wlack is at the back, where the cam tensiner can take up the slack?

Have been riding all summer, it idles well if rich, has smooth power deliver and has bit of a boost at 6 k. It runs 60mph at 5k rpm on the highway.

I just dont think it has enough power and i have been through every other system.

Out a tooth is an easy way to start bending valves. Check, double check, spin the motor triple check, and then check it again. Don't get this wrong... for a million reasons, sanity being the main one.

Set it to the marks and if you move it one tooth either way the marks don't line up! and with the chain adjusted it shouldn't be able to move

one tooth equals about 20 crankshaft degrees, you wont hit a valve one tooth out, advanced or retarded, download the manual or look in the faq to set your cam timing.
