77 cb550f buildup w/Pics
« on: May 05, 2006, 09:49:48 AM »
Well, after my cb has sat under a shed for 3 years or so, i finally got around to starting it. I paid 200 buck for the bike. It ran good when i put it up and it still builds good compression so im probably gonna do very little to the motor. So here is my game plan.

Swap the front end with one off of a 750f super sport
Rear disc brake swap
Comstar wheels - Probably gonna powder coat them black
New bars, Cables, Bearings, Chain, Brass Swingarm bushings
Frame sand blasted and powdercoated.

I had some pictures of the bike before i stripped it down but i've lost them somewhere. I'm gonna be posting pics here throughout the build. I will let you guys know when i update the pics.

etn4runner, always good to see another project. Also good to see another 550 being shown.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy all buildups especially with photos, most seem to be 750s. And I like all
    the SOHC4s but, since I have a 500 and 2 550s, it's refreshing to see a 550 being built. And one with
Comstars, even if they're not the same style as mine. Carry on dude, we'll be watching. Later on, Bill

thanks for the props bill. I've been doing some research and im a little worried about the charging system on my 550. Has anyone tried having the stator wound tighter so that it would have a higher output? I searched but couldn't find anything along those lines.
BTW guys, any suggestions you have for the build, feel free to let me know. I may use them, and i may not but you guys seem to have some pretty cool ideas when it comes to the cb bikes.

I did some searching and didn't find anything in the faq either but i need to know if there is a good place to buy a front fender for my 750f front end.

Watch ebay for front fenders.  Every one that I have seen so far is in worse shape than mine (which is not bad)

Are you going to go with a straight 550 motor or will it be a mix of 550 and 650?
If you are thinking of rearsets, you might check out what Greg did and how he mounted
them ohiocaferacers.com Those 3pc clamps seem to be pretty decent, keeps you
from having to weld mounts, unless you just want to. If you have been keeping up with
some of the other guys modifications, you'll have seen some some really good ideas. I'm sure
that your bike will be another great looking SOHC4!

The charging system on my 75 550f works good but the battery can run down if I idle around a lot. I replaced all of the directionals and tail lights with LED bulbs. they draw much less current and seems to have solved the problem. Before I replaced them the Main fuse would get almost to hot to touch it now runs much cooler.

Could also be attributable to bad connections/grounds. A good cleaning might help also. Unless, of course, you have already done this, in which case you can ignore me.. my wife has been known to.  ;D
