Rebuilding a bike that has been sitting for 22 years.. Been in a non heated garage in IL and not moved once. When parked (22yrs ago) the tires only had a couple hundred miles on them so fairly new. now pulling the bike outa submission the tires have no dry rot, and not one crack. In my eyes they look very good. They also hold air w no leaks.

Low on cash w this build, so replacing them would like to be avoided if not necessary. What do you think. Am I risking my life, and the bike if I ride these tires? Or if everything seems ok im good...?

Get new tires. 22 years is to old. They may look good, but motorcycle tires operate under a lot of stress. Even cheap new tires are better than expensive old ones. You can buy Shinko 712's at MotorcycleSuperStore.com for $43.00 a piece. Add in new tubes and rim strips will bring the order to over $90.00, so you can get free shipping. Don't trust your life to old tires!

Don't even ask, buy new tires! +1 on Motorcycle Superstore, but I'd get the Bridgestone Spitfires.

I just went through this. After being installed in 1973, the Dunlop TT100s weren't excessively cracked and held air, but they were hard as a brick. I wouldn't even consider gettting the bike out on the streets on those tires.

I replaced them with Bridgestone Spitfires from Motorcycle Superstore. Money well spent!

I know its a trumpet! lol but i like the old skool look of these tires. anyone know where i can find something like this for an ok price. to fit a stock 550 wheel..?

Get tires that fit onto your rims properly. That's more important than looks.

Dont mean to hijack the thread, but that bike is BAD ASS. PM me. I would like to know more about it. Im trying to get a 69 Bonnie from my uncle that he has had since new and there is a ton of extra stuff to make a custom out of without ruining collectible parts.

Firestones. You can find them for the 550.

Old quality tires are no good. It does not matter how quality they WERE. They are hard as bricks now with almost no traction.
Go with the shinko tires. I have had them 2 summers now and they have worked excellent on dry and wet pavement. I had the spitfires, these seem every bit as good.
The shinko I think is korean, made from the old yokohama molds bought after their motorcycle tire plant burned. I wouldn't laugh much at korean stuff, hyundai and kia are korean and doing pretty damn good.

Indeed, most things coming out of China are pretty low quality.

I just went with the spitfires I hope I didn't make a mistake. I'm not much of a bridgestone fan. I put the "top of the line" Cheng shins on my brothers bike and he ate #$%* around a corner with a little rubble scattered throughout. Would better tires have helped? Probably.

Your spitfires should be fine, I like them.

Don't think any tire will help much in the marbles.

I'd rather have fresh Chinese tires over the "best" 6+ year old tire, especially 10+ years old. The "best" tire in the world does not resist the outgassing which ages the tire internally. Once the goo inside leaks to the atmosphere, which starts day one and never stops, they get hard and are subject to catastrophic failure, without warning.

+1, I would take them in a heartbeat too if they were doling 'em out for free.

Anything old tire wise is something I would avoid like the plague- too much at stake.

Yeah but even in the car tire world anything chinese seems to skid instead of stop. I feel like their rubber is hard to begin with.
