Strange issue developed a few minutes ago - carb related?
« on: August 26, 2011, 11:18:15 AM »
Well, everything was running well until I was on my way home.  Ran through the gears with a spirited throttle and then all of a sudden the throttle would no longer close without help.  I am running CR29s.  Got home, took off the tank, cables are fine (push and pull).  Throttle closes with a snap when the bike is not running, but once it is fired up the throttle hangs up and revs go to 6 grand.  Return springs on the carbs look fine also.  I checked the new manifolds, they seem fine.  Took off the pods - carbs look clean.  Any ideas gentlemen?

Thanks,
Sparty

Lots of view but no ideas on how to remedy this situation?

I hate gremlins.

That's interesting mate, I had the same problem on my 29mm CR equipped 836cc engine constantly. I assumed that the cables were snagging, and re-routed them several times but never fixed it. I took the CR's off because they shiit me to tears and replaced them with reconditioned stockers with Tintop's "anti-pod" filtered stacks, and my bike has never run better.

I theorised at the time that the slides might be expanding slightly from the engine heat, but I was probably wrong. Cheers, Terry.  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

You can try this....Start the engine and while it is running turn the handlebars fully left then fully to the right. If the idle goes way up the throttle cables  need to be re routed.

BTW...I have never found a gremlin inside any engine.LOL

I am still confused.  Pulled everything apart today.  Carbs are clean as a whistle (see pic).  The cables are fine - no binding.  Pulled them off from the throttle and the carbs - they don't hang up at all in the sleeves.  I adjusted the valves and cam chain.  When I pulled the plugs numbers 2 and 3 looked a bit lean - a bit white on the bar.  Inspected the valves thinking maybe I had a bent valve - they seem to be okay, but they do have some carbon build up on the tops (see pic).  Took the carb tops off, nothing is loose or missing.  Pulled off the bottoms and took out the needles and tubes, soaked them in carb dip and they are very clean.  Float heights are fine - on spec.  Carb springs are good, nothing hanging up.  Going to put it all back together tomorrow and cuss my butt off trying to hook up the cables - what a pain on these carbs.
