Another wet-behind-the-ears CB fan.
« on: May 08, 2006, 06:19:16 PM »
Heya folks!

I figured it's about time I joined the forums considering how much time I've spent eating up bandwidth and pumping up braincells reading posts on here over the past couple of weeks.
So, just for your information, I live on the sunny rock of Vancouver Island on the Westcoast of Canada in the city of Victoria.
My one and only bike so far is a 1981 Honda CT110, which isn't much of a speed demon, but it sure has put a smile on my face over the last year riding and working on it.
For the past few weeks, I've been looking at picking up a classic bike that wouldn't torch my wallet for street use. Having looked at some bikes prices at local shows, I think I'm pretty well set on snagging a 70's CB (I'm just not a touring or newer sport bike type). I like 'em chain drive, spoked, carb'd, air-cooled, kick-started and easy to work on.
Hopefully you guys won't mind indulging my questions and you'll be one of the first to know when I find the right one and just what type it is!

Thanks,
-Rob

Welcome to the forum and bring on the questions. We like to feel smart when we can answer questions  ;D. And on the SOHC bikes there are a great number of different sizes and years to pick from. Look at your needs and meet them with a SOHC bike.

I know there are a few guys out on the west coast with ya...even a few on the island.

Check out the Canada board and you'll get a few of the names...may come in handy if you do pick up a scoot and need a little help wrenching...or if you actualy get it on the road someone to ride with!

You'll have no shortage of guys to ask questions to...some may even give you a straight answer without busting your balls (although they do enjoy giving eachother a hard time almost as much as they enjoy their old Honda's!!!)

You can't go wrong with a SOHC 4...They can be brought back from the dead with a little TLC and you can't beat the value!

Welcome aboard...

Dennis

If it's just for local street use, a cb400f is a great bike. It may not have the power of the cb750 but being lighter and a great handler, it is almost perfect for the job. Plus it will handle the occasional tour.

Smaller bikes can be quite fun in town. But which ever you go with, they can all go on diets!

Hey Rob,

Welcome to the board.  I am in Vancouver, and have an 81 CB650 Custom.  I keep an eye on http://vancouver.craigslist.org/mcy and http://www.buysell.com/ and have seen some 70's SOHC bikes for sale.

Thanks everyone!

Looks like a few more CB have popped their heads up from underneath people's garages in the last few days! So far I am thinking about going either for a 550, 500 or 400. There's a nice non-running (ie, stored for ~2 years) CB550K1 on the island that's essentially stock save for the exhaust.

I've been keeping an eye out for any in Vancouver as well, and (I know I'm shooting myself in the foot for mentioning this one) there looks to be one of those TGTBT (Too Good to Be True) deals for a 78 CB550F on BuySell.com (though considering the voicemail for the number I called was full, it might not be).

Thanks for the heads-up Rob, I'll keep checking over in Van as you guys tend to have a few more kicking around than we do, =)
This whole CB craze of mine started after visiting the Tsawwassen bike meet, which a) was my first and b) was amazing. There was a nice collection of SOHCs in the "for sale" area. Feel free to send me an email about any bikes you might have for sale at emperorchang@hotmail.com

Thanks again, guys!

I'm new here myself Rob! So far the board has made me feel very welcome. I think you will be happy here. I know my bike and I feel better already.
