CB500/4 Carb rebuild - need help, PICS ADDED.
« on: September 17, 2011, 07:26:19 AM »
Currently rebuilding my engine and carbs for a custom build.  I have run into a puzzle with putting the carbs back together, have looked in my workshop manual but can't make it out  :o

Anyway here are some pics of the carb rebuild, bathed in parts washer, then sonic bath with a small unit that I bought in a sale, then cleaned, primered and satin blacked.  Lids and bowls polished.

and this is the issue....not sure if I have the plastic spacers the correct way in on the shaft?  I could do with a picture if anyone has one?

The plastic spacer is shown in the manual as being placed to/on the linkage side, so you have it backwards.
also when assembling make sure you take allot time setting the float heights correctly, for it affects the lean/rich condition if set too high, you will have a rich cylinder or cylinders.

excellent work on the cleaning, you have the lift arms in the wrong carbs aswell, the profile of the external link should mirror the arms inside, not follow the same profile.

Hiya Dave thanks for the compliments - yeah I noticed that also lol, first time working on a full bank of carbs, I'm used to singles and twins  ;D

Mind you when they were all on the support bracket it made it easier to match them up.  They are all sorted now.  Just need to finish off the support bracket once I have made up my mind about colour?  Overall i'm really happy with the turn out, will be using single foam pod filters which should finish the look off nicely?

no worries brat, except for the look over function and tuning of pods you desire versus a proper stock intake plenum and filter assembly, youve done so well on the cleaning etc only to have to cross so many unnecessary hurdles youve now erected for yourself in the choice of running single foam pod filters, these little engines truly run best with the factory engineered intake system, the only gain will be tuning experience for a lesser outcome.

thanks Dave, I am building a custom CB along the lines of a cafe/brat style - so the OE airbox will be in the way for my build.  I have a very good friend on hand that is a bike mechanic and knows these older Jap bikes like the back of his hand.  He has ran these older Jap bikes in all sorts of form and has always managed to dial them in.  At this stage i'm not too fussed but when it comes to balancing them up and getting her running right them I may start pulling my hair out - until then i'm gonna try and stay calm  :o ;D

will do - I had a similar problem with a Royal Enfield that I built, they ran a Micarb which was a copy of the Mikuni, they were set up for the Indian climate and never performed that well in the UK - an easy fix for them was to get a Mikuni alternative and a cone filter, did that and it worked fine.  I'm not saying that this will be as easy but also atmospheric changes across the globe play havoc with a bikes set up, i'm guessing one of the reasons why same model bikes in a large continent will run differently dependant on the area that they are?

Not that easy with pods because they {except for some  K&N's} lack the velocity stack that was designed for these bikes to make them run properly, without them you will never get the bike to run as smooth as one equipped with the correct stacks and box....Just saying
