where to get electronic ignition
« on: May 12, 2006, 05:05:50 AM »
I had a web site that I lost somewhere and it had electronic ignitions for under $200.
I am going on line now and seeing them for up to $450.
Does anybody know where to get them for a reasonable price?
Thanks
Craig

MRieck is right - and I that is the cheapest I've seen (by about $30).  However, if you're looking for dyna coils, mpsracing has the cheapest I've seen at ~$112.00 (vs. $120  - so not much cheaper).

A little bit more but Dynoman has them for $140 - and the owner is really knowledgeable about CB750s.

Would these work for a 550?

-->Whoops!  Edit here:  I found them at Dennis Kirk, but I thought I had read earlier that these ignitions were no longer available?  Or is that a different series of Dyna electronic ignitions?

Also, the specs say it requires a 3 ohm or higher coil- what's the stock coil provide?

Anyone got info on this?

I've got one on my 76 550K and it works great.  I'm still in the habit of pulling off the points (elec ign.) cover every couple thousand miles to set the timing - and it has never required adjustment since I switched to the Dyna-S.  PLUS - no changing points and condensors.

What else did you need?  Stock coils work ok?  Also, how difficult of an installation?

Thanks for the info!  :)

Aside from some standard tools - the only thing I'd recommend you have is a timing light.  They recommend taking your gas tank off to connect/splice to a wire (Black/white stripe) with a connection they supply.  You have to remove the points cover, remove points plate and advancing mechanism - install a magnet device on the advancer, then the electronic ignition, and connect electrical.  Put tank back on and set timing.   All of this is explained in their instructions - takes about an hour start to finish.

It works with stock coils - I upgraded to Dyna 3 Ohm coils a year later.  Only because Uncle Sam paid me to - never had a problem with the stock coils.

How did the coils mount up?  Just bolt right in stock position?  Or, was some bracket fabrication required?
