Putting back fork top bolt
« on: October 10, 2011, 10:54:53 AM »
I had the bad idea of changing forks oil on my 750 K3. I unscrewed the two fork top bolts but now I cannot put them back in. I cannot compress enough the springs and because of arthritis I cannot put the bike on the rear stand.
Any tips?
Thanks

are you in a garage where you can 'hang' the bike from the rafters using ratchet straps around the neck?
gotta get the weight off the front wheel.
just need to get one in, and then you can lower bike to floor.
dont ask me how i know  ::)
one at a time, bro.

sounds like you need to call some buddies over and muscle it up onto a few blocks under the engine....
while its down, rinse your forks out with some mineral spirits so all the old fork oil is gone.

A good way to get it back in (once the weight is off as others mentioned) is to use a socket and a "speeder".

The speeder allows you to apply sufficient "downforce" and turn the bolt first backwards a turn to align the threads then forwards to screw it in easily.

Yeah, I use the speeder and socket too.

You'll need to get ALL the weight off the frontend. Have you? A jack under the front of the engine, the sidestand and rear wheel complete the 3 points of contact. (centerstand would be preferred, but not necessary) Jack it just high enough you can slip a paper under the front wheel. Then the speeder/socket should work well. You may be able to catch a few threads by hand if ALL the weight is off.

Gotta get the weight off, hope you did not get a big fender ding..
I use a 23mm socket, extension and ratchet.. push down on ratchet while turning..

I finally managed to do it using a power tool and a socket...
