Here's serial numbers by years: http://www.sohc4.net/?p=111

Is that number from the engine or the frame?

That list and link posted will not work. It is incomplete.

That number is the engine number.  " E" is for engine.

It is a 1978 engine.
Starting CB750E-3000001 =1978.
CB750 K,  if it is an automatic would be CB750A
CB750F also.  Need to see photo.
The frame number is on the steering head of the motorcycle.
It is stamped into the left side and there is a glued and riveted foil tag on the right side of the steering neck. All motorcycles are like that.

Too bad you did not help us and show us a photo of the motorcycle.

The gas tank must have that hidden gas cap under a lift up lid. Right?

You mean the link doesn't work or the list itself is bad??

The link works fine, I can't vouch for the accuracy or completeness of the list.
It does have F engine serial numbers that start at 3100001.

I vote for 1978 CB750F3 engine. What number do you find on the top head fin intake side next to #3? (of course heads can be swapped around). Is it black? (any engine can be painted)
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)
