Picking up a Suzi GSXR 250

Another one of my son's "finds" a $600 GSXR250 with alternator problems but comes with a spare motor so shouldn't be a problem for me to fix.
Can go next to the Honda CBR250 that we have been working on, that one should be up for sale soon.
I think that makes 5 bikes so far we have cobbled back together, CBR400RR, 2x FZR250's, he might just pay for his wedding yet with rebuilds! ;)

Napier-Rotorua-Napier not my idea of fun on my first day off but we got the bike home.
Must say I don't think it is worth the $600 he spent on it but we shall see, it fires up easy and is real low mileage, I believ it has been sitting in a dusty shed for a few years and last time it was road legal and registered was 1992!
Now I need to read up on the GSXR250 so I know just what I am doing. ;D

OK piccys as promised, man is this thing rough! Anyhow we are looking on the bright side as most of what troubles the bike is not beyond us as a team. It came with some interesting silver GSXR1100 fairings as well? I started stripping it before I remembered the camera.
Check out the number plate reg sticker, we haven't used those in NZ for a long long time and the seller was only the second (careful?) owner lol. Mileage is shown in speedo photo and is genuine. Fork seals are shot, tyres look like originals the bike was sold with and are also shot.
Rear disc brake system is missing? you'd think you would notice something like that eh! All over the bike is in barn find condition with surface rust and dust everywhere.

Mechanic mate tells me these bikes were handgrenades, take them 5k over the red line just once and all the valves bent!
I'm hoping that is not the reason this was parked up in 1993 but believe it was an electrical charging fault.

Cleaned the plugs, removed and cleaned carbs, part of one float was lying in the bottom of the bowl in the green gunge, the little pin that holds the float valve on.
All 4 main jets blocked solid, so much for the PO's stated "I had it running the other day"!
Searched in vain throughout my shed for a thing small enough yet strong enough to clear them, remembered a member on this site saying the "E" string off a guitar was ideal, looked in my gat bag and there was an E string, peeled off the gold wire and you get something as strong as Supermans erection but as small as a fleas eyelash ha ha worked a treat.
Squirt of ether (called Start U Bastard, no kidding) and she fired up after about 15 years of a silent death, ran smooth as a sewing machine. :)
Changed out oil filter and new oil, starts every time, few new problems now that it is running, will ask members.

Hi Rick, i posted in your other thread mate. The sidestand on your 250 probably has a safety switch, i had one on my GSXR1100, it is there so you can't take off with your side stand down, bike just dies as soon as you kick it into gear.  Freaked me out a couple of times when i went to take off and was in the process of lifting my feet at the same time the bike died..... :o ;D

OK so the PO said it had a charging issue of some sort, I think I found the problem! >:(
Bare wires from the alternator earthing on the side of the motor, very clever mate very bludy clever!!
And just how do you mangle a magnet like that? :o

Nah runs smooth as a sewing machine even without the air filters fitted, quiet little 4 cylinder engine with only twin carbs. (where is my tongue out at Fiddy emoticon?) ;D
