Petcock screws
« on: November 03, 2011, 11:10:05 AM »
Are these things made out of something special? I picked up a pair of 6x30 (closest I could get to OEM 6x32) button-head screws to hold the petcock to the tank. The diameter of the heads was too big to fit in the recess, so I went to the industrial bolt shop by my office to get some with smaller heads and they told me that regular screws would rust. What?!? So are the OEM ones special or was this guy full of it?

'71 CB500 if it makes any difference.

Just buy a handful of them and if they do rust change them out. Personally I'm dubious they would rust significantly in a petrol environment.

Exactly. And I'll be more positive than that. At first, standard screws are at least rust resistant, usually zinc plated. In an exterior environment these will EVENTUALLY rust. But could be 30+ years, just look at all the case cover screws on members bikes. They may be stuck, but not rusted. (The stick came from corrosion between the steel screw and the aluminum cover, not from rust.)

Then, the screws you are talking about are immersed in gasoline, and as long as that is true, they will never rust.

The only allen screws they had were the black coated ones. Will those be ok?

To me, as long as the heads don't interfere as the buttonheads did, I'd put anything in there i could find. ACE would have regular Phillips. Also stainless.

Just feel like doing something different?

So I went to two other hardware stores and neither had phillips screws with smaller heads. Ended up getting a couple of these and they work fine. Also, no stripping 'em if the petcock ever has to come off. I put some gas in there and let it sit for a couple of hours last night while I was working on other stuff and no leaks, so I guess the washers worked too... we'll see when I get to the shop later this afternoon.

Will the round brass filter screen set down in there?  If not, you could grind down the heads.

My ACE would have had them, they have everything!   :D

Snapped that pic before I snugged 'em up. But yeah, the screen sat in there as it should.

I was told that you need to use Nylon washers, is this correct, thanks for the info, I am putting my tank together this weekend.

I think you CAN use nylon, but OEM is the fiber washers as far as I know. Good luck!
