removal of lower bearing
« on: November 07, 2011, 04:11:44 PM »
Hey all, need to remove the lower bearing race on the steering stem. Look around and the only thing I found was to cut it off with a Dremal. Anyone have a different suggestion? I hate to starting cutting on the stem.  Thanks
Mark

Are you keeping the lower race ? If not try a long drift punch . Worked for me . I've also use a hardwood dowel when I didn't want to damage the race . I've never needed to resort to cutting the race to relive pressure . Maybe I've just been lucky .

I cut mine with a dremel, worked ok,  but I understand your reluctance to cutting on the stem.  I think you might get enough clearance to push it off if you pack the stem in ice or icewater, and heat the race with a propane torch (not an acetylene torch).  You might get them to move enough to make the hardwood dowel tool work well.

Yeah, it will come off with modest heat, like a heat gun, or torch, and a drift. Shouldn't be that hard. I mean it takes some whacks, but that's all.

Thanks all, think I will try a little heat and then beat on it some.
