Problem with misfiring....Please Help!!
« on: November 24, 2011, 08:16:39 PM »
This is my first time post but have been following this forum for a long time now. I have just finished my project from the summer. Its a 76 cb750 supersport. Well anyways heres my problem. I have had my head port and polished and decked, I cleaned the carbs and installed a new carb kit(factory honda), got new coils, new points plate(includes all new points and condensers and new wiring), adjusted all the value spacing, timing is correct and points gap is correct, I installed pod filters and replaced the main jet with a bigger main jet(don't exactly remember what size) to compensate for the pod filters, had the carbs bench synced and the bike still misfires kind of. It used to misfire and backfire when just at idle and then i adjusted the pilot screw and it helped the idle issue. But now at constant throttle(at around 3500 to 500O rpm) the #2 cylinder sputters and. Under full throttle on the other hand the bike responds perfectly. Also when in neutral and at idle when i blip the throttle its slow to respond but after it hits 2500 rpm it accelerates fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. I will try to post pictures of the bike as soon as the web site allows me.

It sounds like you may need to clean the carbs again. Trash in the fuel circuit somehow- it only takes a small particle. Concentrate on the number 2 carb since thats the one giving you trouble.  I had to clean a set 5 times to get it exactly right. Do you have the rubber o-rings properly in place under the fuel mixture screws. Have you checked the plugs at idle to see if its running lean on the pilots?? You will need to put in a new set to verify lean idle. Also, since you added the pods, you might need to raise the needles up a little to get your mid range mixture right.

Plus one on the needles and a bench synch only puts you in the ballpark for it to run. It will need a vacuum synch but only after all of the other tune up chores have been performed. The mains only control full throttle. You should try to remember which ones you put in. Depends also on your altitude. The higher up you get....the smaller the mains will need to be. It may take you some time and effort to get it right but it will be worth it when the bike sings through the whole throttle range.

Make sure the float level is right on for #2. I fought a bad carb for a couple of cleanings only to discover that the float was "heavy"..ie leaking. Make sure the float will float evenly in a glass of water. If it doesn't... it won't ever work right. my .02 worth. Good Luck

When I was dialing my bike in...I had a problem with the carbs that I had just rebuilt............not a leak but a mid range stutter. What I did was dump my fuel from carb 1 into a babyfood jar and mark the level with a sharpie. This is also a good time to examine the sample of gas for dirt, water, or whatever. Anyways....dump the gas and move on to #2..3..4.......my 1,2,&4 were spot on but 3 was quite lower. All I had to do was drop the float bowl and bend the float until it gave me a sample equal to the other 3. Lo and behold...........It ran great and thats even before I vac synched it. After dropping aprox. $110 for a Morgan carb tune and putting it to work......It ran like a whole different machine.....smooth, quick start, good gas milage..........it goes on & on.
