wtf have i done? question about valcover (rockerbox)

So I have rendered my stock rocker box useless by being a complete idiot and cracking it. I have a 77 cb550k. I ordered one off ebay for a 74 500 which the guy told me is the same. ITS NOT. Will it work? The way the rocker rods are held in is different. I don't have my bike with me at the moment so I cant test fit it. Just thought I'd ask. The last piece of the puzzle and I managed to #$%* it up just wonderful....

 According to motogrid, it's the same part # for all CB500/550's.

It will work as far as I know....make sure the arm shafts have not ovaled the retaining holes. The pinned shafts prevent that from happening.

I cracked one of the tabs off on a CB550 once and found a local guy that did ally welding. He fixed it cheaply!

twisted your might have had the locked rocker shafts,with the wedge bolt that you shouldnt do up too tight,,the 500 one will work it just dosent have the locked shafts,try and wobble the shafts in the new one to see if its worn.

Ah the locked shafts is where I was going crazy. They seem very snug. Is there a way of preventing this other than using a newer cover? Thanks Guys!

a little soft heat and a brass drift,dont do them too tight or the wedge action cracks the cover.
