SOHC Clinics
« on: October 05, 2012, 11:07:06 AM »
How great would it be if someone in the know set up a clinic each time they did something to a bike?

Carb cleaning 101 on Thursday at 6:00  $50 per person

Clutch removal and replacement Sunday at 12:00  $50 per person

Motor removal . . . . .

Motor rebuild . . . . . .

Paint . . . . . .

Timing . . . . .

Valve Adjusting . . . . .

I think it would possibly be the best thing that could happen for me since getting the bike! I am definitely a hands on learner. Am good at the book stuff, but unidentified parts and not stock set ups or text book scenarios seem to find their way in to my personal projects....FYI, I am in Raleigh NC if any of "The Knows" decide on such a clinic :)

Isn't this forum a virtual clinic?

I follow the manual but if something unexpected arises I post a question and receive knowledgeable replies from those with experience.

Hasn't failed me yet!

Interesting idea. I've given lots of clinics/workshops/classes... but only for climbing stuff.
Not a clinic but I have thought it might be fun to have a local SOHC4 carb sync party. :)

I could see the benefit of it but there's something to be said for reading, and reading some more, and finally figuring it out.  You don't forget that way imo.

In the beginning I think we all feel that way to some degree. Wish we had someone to show us how or even do some work for us.

In the end...meh, I don't need it. I've got most of it figured out. It's not heart surgery or learning a programming language or even rocket science. We all figure it out eventually.

There's a group in Cincinnati I ride with that has plans to do a sort of "get together" on a semi-regular basis along these lines.  The idea is that if someone else in the group knows how to fix something you're having problems with they teach you and the group and everyone gets wiser because of it.  Nice to see the same sort of idea here, although, with so many books and other sources (sohc4.net) out there, I don't think anyone's really gonna pay for that kinda thing (you marked $50 to the right of some of your headings?).

Hondaman would probably end up being a reasonably wealthy person if he did that but I doubt he'd have the patience to put up with all of us. :)

I know that corvair guys do it. I used to frequent corvaircenter.com when i still had my 65 and i remember that a bunch of guys took extra, spare parts they had along with the owners stuff and rebuilt his engine. it was a lakewood wagon. They invited everybody over and asked for like 7$ for anybody who wanted bbq and beers.

It wasnt local to me but ppl deff do it. Its more a proximity thing but its a cool idea

I'm in tarrytown ny and would be up for some cool stuff like that

Its a good idea that is already happening........we had carb-cleaning and a timing session at the Road America Vintage Motorcycle Festival.....The Vintage Japanese Motorcycle Club tries to have a printed session on something in every magazine....and so does Motorcycle Classics.

Vintage Motorcycle Days at Mid-Ohio has held numerous clinics.....some for free.....some at a nominal charge.  A few years ago I gave a clinic to several dozen bystanders on how to assemble a CL77 305 Scrambler....I thought it would attract some attention and it sure did......I even attracted a buyer for the bike 8) 8) 8)

The BMW owner's group holds numerous clinics at its annual convention.

All of this points to one very important ingrediant that seems to be missing from this group......Only a few of us actually get out of town and go to places with our common interest.  I think that is improving over time and maybe now is the time to start planning on more regional events for our interested members to attend as a club.

I could do a seminar on removing or installing a CB750 motor......or basic model ID and differences that can or cannot be mixed and matched......how to install the tappered roller bearings in the steering head.......How to prepare to visit or compete at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Pick one and get someone to join me with another clinic......how many of you will show at the RA Vintage Weekend next June?

Who will host a clinic at each of the AHRMA road-racing events?

We should do something like this at Barber's.  I could bring my Carbtune but that's probably about all I could offer.  Remember, I'm the guy that dropped a zip tie into his case   ::) ::) ::)

We all post in that area forum or on here and the guy with a good location volunteers. it kinda snowballs rly. its just disconnected

It works well as a local event, there is an annual tech session the local Volvo club puts on for it's members. This last year was all about SU carbs, was real nice to brush up on them as well as learn some new things. It would be nice if we had a local vintage Honda club or such that does the same.

Too bad you don't live in Brooklyn. Along with another guy, I teach workshops. It's not specifically on SOHC4s, but we usually take a basket case and resurrect it over the course of 6 weeks.  Hands on lessons in theory of operation, insure that when you start your own project, you're not just working by rote, but understanding the why things do what they do.

Had a Maintenance Day at my house once.  It was a lot of fun.  People from out of state showed up, even had one from Maine.  Totally different bike though.

Plenty of pics below.
I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

We have these clinics in the Model T club I belong to. What happens is that each clinic is hands on; so if we're talking about the magneto or Rocky Mountain brakes, we'll have two or three examples that we all take apart and put back together. We have a saying: Give a man a charged magneto and he's happy today; teach him how to charge it himself and he's happy for life!

Another advantage to this is that you finally get to meet all of the folks you've been chatting with all of this time in the forums! Most of them turn out to be real people!
