wire covering
« on: November 24, 2012, 04:24:53 AM »
Hey all, still slowing restoring a 1975 750k and have a question which I'm sure someone can help me with.  I took off the handlebar controls today and the black covering, heat shirk, whatever it is call is really messed up in many places. So I know others have mention where they got replacements from ( I thought it was McMasters) but now that I need some I can't find it.  Any help, recommendations, tips on where to get, brand, size, what have you is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mark

If you want to go the heat shrink route, you can go to most any hardware store and buy the appropriate width and length...Larry

Here is a link to what I used. Was the closest to OEM that I could find. It's glossy and stays that way if you choose to shrink it. http://www.wirecare.com/products.asp?prodline=H2G .

Thanks dlhoulton.  Anyone have an idea as to what size I would need to cover the wires that go though the handlebars on a 75 750k?

This is the place you want for stock sleeving http://www.vintageconnections.com/

The stock cables were not shrink tubing.  Shrink tubing will make the cable harness very firm, not easy to bend.  Might be OK though with some lubricant to get it through the bars, if that is what you were going to be doing.  Otherwise if your going to run the cables on the outside you would probably want to stick with the vintage sleeving site.

+1 on the Vintage connections sleeving.  I ended up using the 14mm which is a little larger than the original, but it was
much easier to get all the wires through.  Even though its larger than the original, its not noticeable when installed on the bike.
You only need 1 foot for the piece from just under the tank to the head light shell. I used the 6mm for the front stop light switch.  I ordered 1 foot of 11mm, one foot of 14mm and 2 feet of the 6mm. Very reasonable price and shipping.  You will need to replace some of the end connectors (also available from Vintage connections) because not all the wires will go through the sleeving with the connectors on.

Don't use heat shrink as a sleeve. It will get brittle over time and break. It's usefull for short lengths, to cover solder connections and the like but not for lengths more than an inch or so.

Thanks all, never thought about having a problem with heat shrink in the handlebars.  Looks like an order to Vintage Connections will go out tonight. Thanks again.

My next step is to start looking around to see what other have done to restore the controls. I have cleaned and lub all of the switchs so the only thing left are the housings themself.  Any ideas or comments??
