Easy install of a bank of 4 carbs.......................
« on: May 07, 2013, 11:42:37 AM »
I recently used two pieces of sheet metal to help install my 4 carbs on a 1976 CB550F. The principal here is to create a trough for the carbs to travel in. Do this by cutting two pieces of light guage sheet metal to a size of 3 inches by 12 inches. Hold one of them in front of the intake manifolds and the other in front of the air box intakes. Then have someone else to slide the carbs in between the two strips of sheet metal till they are lined up and in place. Then simply slide the two pieces of sheet metal out, pop the carbs into the intake boots and the air box boots and Wa-La, your done....................

I popped one side on fine then used a ratchet strap and 2x4 to pop the rest in.

If your talking about "popping" them into the intake boots, thats not what I am describing. I am talking about actually getting the carbs to fit in between the intake and airbox boots. You have to do that before you can "pop" them in..................

I'm having a hard time visualizing this.  Care to draw up a schematic :D

I find it easier to unbolt the intakes and take the carb rack off with the intakes as one unit. I do it all the time and it's the easiest way I have found yet.

+1 mine will come right off and back on when you pull the manifolds too.

Like that sheet metal solution. Minimal removal work involved. Might try it next time.
I've tried the airbox strapping technique for removal but didn't like it so I removed the airbox as per the manual.
Most difficult bit is getting to screw on the oval clip at the back of the airbox.
Inside the air filter chamber there's a removable insert (see photo). Pull it back clear of the airbox clip and the airbox will slide out right easy leaving loads of space for carb removal.  :)

I get the concept.  Like to see a video of you doing it.  It's always been a hard thing to do.  Next time I have to do it, which hopefully will be never, I'll use that method.

If the carbs dont line up, loosen the rubbers and twist to line them up, leave them loose till after install. They must go on first.
