'77 CB750k - Side Stand Broke Off!!!!!
« on: June 13, 2013, 03:27:20 PM »
**I need pictures of stock 77-78 CB750K side stand mount to fabricate a new one if any one could help it would be much appreciated**

Yesterday when getting ready to go for a quick spin I rolled my bike down to the end of my driveway, put it on it's side stand and turned it on to warm up. I walked back to my garage to get my helmet and gloves when I heard a crashing sound, my bike falling on to it's side. I ran over, killed the engine, and lifted it up with the help of my dad who was in the garage. It turned out the cause of this was the side stand giving out on what looked to be a previous repair to it.

The bike wasn't to badly damaged. The handlebars took the brunt of the force and were bent. The bar end mirror was scuffed where it hit. The left side headlight bracket snapped. The headlight bucket was dented in but I managed to pull it out, it will just need painting. The stator cover was scratched but I should be able to sand and re-polish it. Sadly the freshly painted tank suffered two small dings where the left side controls hit into from the bars bending.

It could have been a lot worse damage and could have happened far from my house somewhere where I wouldn't be able to easily get it home. The bike had been kept on it's centerstand for the majority of time I owned it because I was working on it. I had just finished the bike last week and had only now been leaving it on it's side stand.

My dad does a lot of welding for work and said he should be able to make a new mount on the frame, he just want's to know what the original looked like as a point of reference. The previous owner's repair was done where the bolt is and put all of the force at his poor weld and not on the frame.

If anyone could post a picture of their side stand mount on the frame and post it here I'd really appreciate it.
Thanks!

Nic

This is my 73 model, slightly different but it shows that it ain't too critical. Just look at the bit that broke off.

Thanks for the quick reply Nic! I just wanted to be sure there wasn't anything else to it originally since it looked like it had been repaired before. Hopefully this doesn't put me out of commission to long, I ordered replacement bars and headlight mounts last night, should be here in the next few days.

just curious is this normal?  ???

or was the side stand to loose or to tight?

or was the bike really leaned over to the side on the side stand?

Remember that a stock CB750 frame is only 1/16 inch thickness so that reinforcing plate is a good design.
Also you do not want to put a transverse weld on the frame. That would cause a crack.
Only a weld parallel with the plate.

I realize this is different since the break occurred on the hole.

Looks like it was repaired sometime before and just welded around the hole where the side stand pivots. It wasn't loose or overly tightened. The front end of the bike was on a slight incline but wasn't leaning over more than usual. I don't know how it broke originally, I think the repair just failed.

My dad's plan is to weld in a new plate and put his welds in the sections I marked on the picture.

Fixed the busted side stand bracket today with the help of my dad. He fabricated a piece up for me and welded it into place.

I think it's just the angle the picture was taken from, looking at it straight on it just goes a little past center of the bracket. It seems to be standing up just fine, so that's all that really matters.
